R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of James Philip "Phil" Murray on
1-2 January 2, 1999, at the age of 81, has brought a great loss to the
1-3 family and many friends of this beloved individual; and
1-4 WHEREAS, An Illinois native, Mr. Murray was born February 13,
1-5 1917, in Saline County; he married the former Anna Reba Huneycutt
1-6 on July 17, 1945, in Cleburne, and seven years later the Murrays
1-7 moved to Texas, settling in Odessa and becoming valued members of
1-8 that community; and
1-9 WHEREAS, This patriotic gentleman attained the rank of master
1-10 sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps while serving as a crew chief
1-11 on a B-17 with the Eighth Air Force in Ipswich, England, during
1-12 World War II; after his return to civilian life, he worked as a
1-13 mechanical maintenance foreman for Phillips Petroleum for 30 years
1-14 until his retirement in 1979; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Mr. Murray's participation in community
1-16 organizations included membership in the Odessa Gem & Mineral
1-17 Society, the PropBusters Model Airplane Club, and the First Baptist
1-18 Church, and he was ordained as a deacon on October 20, 1970; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Among his many passions were a love of travel,
1-20 woodworking, flying model airplanes with his son, and lapidary, a
1-21 hobby that demonstrated his creativity through his work with rocks;
1-22 and
1-23 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Mr. Murray enjoyed a strong
1-24 and lasting relationship with his wife of 53 years, and he also
2-1 took considerable pleasure in spending time with his children; and
2-2 WHEREAS, Although Mr. Murray's presence will be deeply
2-3 missed, his memory will long endure in the hearts and minds of all
2-4 who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-6 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of James Philip "Phil"
2-7 Murray and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
2-8 his wife, Anna Reba Murray; to his daughter and son-in-law, Mary
2-9 Murray Minton and Dr. Ellis Minton; to his son and
2-10 daughter-in-law, James Philip Murray II and Lorna Thomas-Murray; to
2-11 his grandchildren, Phil Wright, Nancy Diego, Carol Wright, Amy
2-12 Wickenhauser, Sarah Murray, Elizabeth Christian, Steve Minton, and
2-13 Karl Minton; to his aunt, Genevieve Landrum; to his cousin, Knox
2-14 Murray; and to his six great-grandchildren; and, be it further
2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-17 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-18 James Philip "Phil" Murray.
