R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Alzheimer's Association Coalition of Texas is a 1-2 coalition of the 17 chapters of the Alzheimer's Association in the 1-3 State of Texas; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's Disease is an incurable disease that 1-5 destroys the brain, robbing individuals of memory and judgment and 1-6 leaving them incapable of functioning on their own, cognitively or 1-7 physically; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Over 265,000 Texans have Alzheimer's Disease or a 1-9 related disorder, and that number is estimated to increase to 1-10 300,000 by the year 2000; and 1-11 WHEREAS, One in three Texas families is affected by 1-12 Alzheimer's Disease; and 1-13 WHEREAS, One in 10 persons over 65 has Alzheimer's Disease, 1-14 and almost half of those over 85 have the disease; and 1-15 WHEREAS, At least 50 percent of residents in long-term care 1-16 facilities in Texas have some form of dementia, with Alzheimer's 1-17 being the most prevalent; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Nearly one in three people in Texas is a baby 1-19 boomer, who early in the next century will move into the age of 1-20 highest risk for Alzheimer's Disease; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The total annual cost of Alzheimer's Disease is in 2-1 the United States today is at least $100 billion, and Alzheimer's 2-2 Disease costs American businesses $33.16 billion a year; and 2-3 WHEREAS, On February 2, 1999, the Alzheimer's Association 2-4 Coalition of Texas is hosting a day for friends and family of 2-5 people with Alzheimer's Disease to visit their legislators and talk 2-6 to them about Alzheimer's Disease; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the State of 2-8 Texas, 76th Legislature, hereby welcome the friends and family of 2-9 people with Alzheimer's Disease from around the state to the 2-10 Capitol to talk with legislators about issues that are important to 2-11 people with Alzheimer's Disease and their loved ones.
