No. 99 76R5359 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 Dr. Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., who was named a Nobel Laureate in 1-3 Medicine for 1998; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Dr. Murad was one of three Americans working in the 1-5 field of medicine and physiology chosen to receive this prestigious 1-6 accolade, which he earned for his discovery relating to nitric 1-7 oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system; and 1-8 WHEREAS, A native of Whiting, Indiana, Dr. Murad attended 1-9 Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where he 1-10 attained his M.D. and Ph.D. in pharmacology; and 1-11 WHEREAS, He currently is director of the Institute of 1-12 Molecular Medicine, as well as the chairman of the Department of 1-13 Integrative Biology, Pharmacology, and Physiology at the University 1-14 of Texas--Houston Medical School and also serves on the board of 1-15 directors of Tripos, Inc.; Dr. Murad is a University of Texas 1-16 Regental Professor and John S. Dunn, Sr., distinguished chair in 1-17 physiology and medicine; he previously held positions at the 1-18 University of Virginia, Stanford University, Northwestern 1-19 University, Abbott Laboratories, and Molecular Geriatrics 1-20 Corporation, where he was president and CEO; and 1-21 WHEREAS, In addition to his most recent honor, Dr. Murad is 1-22 also a recipient of the 1988 Ciba Award, won the Albert Lasker 1-23 Basic Medical Research Award in 1996, and became a member of the 1-24 National Academy of Sciences in 1997; and 2-1 WHEREAS, The field of medicine is as complex as the 2-2 physiology of the human body on which it is based, and those 2-3 dedicated individuals who significantly further our knowledge in 2-4 this vital field provide a lasting benefit to their fellowman and 2-5 are indeed worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Ferid Murad on his receipt of 2-8 the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine and that he be extended sincere 2-9 best wishes for continued success and happiness in the future; and, 2-10 be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for Dr. Murad as an expression of highest regard by the 2-13 Texas House of Representatives.
