By Counts H.R. No. 101 76R4699 BE-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Clay G. Johnson has served as president of Texas 1-2 State Technical College-Sweetwater since 1987, and his resignation 1-3 on January 14, 1999, marked the end of his highly productive career 1-4 with that West Texas institution; and 1-5 WHEREAS, This dedicated Lone Star educator has been an 1-6 admired and respected presence on the TSTC system campuses for 25 1-7 years, and he is widely recognized for his many contributions to 1-8 the school; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The twin tutorial and application components of 1-10 Dr. Johnson's administrative strategies have helped to bring TSTC 1-11 from an area vocational institution to a leader in advanced and 1-12 emerging research technologies; from agriculture to robotics, it 1-13 seems every department and field of study has grown in both stature 1-14 and strength under his guidance; and 1-15 WHEREAS, After earning his bachelor's degree in biology from 1-16 Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Dr. Johnson began 1-17 his career as an instructor teaching biology and physical science 1-18 at Watertown High School; he went on to earn a master's degree in 1-19 botany and a doctorate in plant science at South Dakota State 1-20 University; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson moved to Texas in 1973 when he accepted 1-22 a position with Waco's Texas State Technical Institute as chairman 1-23 of Instructional Development Services; propelled by aptitude and 1-24 ability, he assumed several positions of increasing responsibility, 2-1 culminating with his appointment to the TSTC-Sweetwater presidency 2-2 in 1987; and 2-3 WHEREAS, He has been widely published and cited in 2-4 educational circles over the years and belongs to a number of 2-5 professional and honorary organizations, including the American 2-6 Institute of Biological Sciences, the American Association for the 2-7 Advancement of Science, and the Texas Technical Society, which he 2-8 served as president, and he was named Outstanding Technical 2-9 Educator of Texas in 1984; and 2-10 WHEREAS, His singular tenure with TSTC will not be soon 2-11 forgotten, for Dr. Johnson has truly distinguished himself through 2-12 his service there and it is indeed appropriate to recognize him and 2-13 his work at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-15 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Clay G. Johnson for his 2-1/2 decades 2-16 of service with Texas State Technical College and extend warm best 2-17 wishes for the future to him, his wife Gisela, and his daughters 2-18 Kara and Audra; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-20 prepared for Dr. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the 2-21 Texas House of Representatives.
