                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Marcus A. Weems on November 29, 1998,
 1-2     at the age of 81, has brought a great loss to the family and many
 1-3     friends of this beloved individual; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Mr. Weems was born October 8, 1917, and married
 1-5     Sarah Bancroft on January 1, 1941; they enjoyed a loving and
 1-6     lasting relationship for 57 years; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The owner of Marcus Weems Lumber Company in West
 1-8     Columbia, Mr.  Weems was a co-founder and chairman of the board of
 1-9     West Columbia National Bank; this patriotic man served in the U.S.
1-10     Navy and was a veteran of World War II; and
1-11           WHEREAS, An active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church,
1-12     Mr. Weems was an involved and highly respected community leader who
1-13     served on the Salvation Army Board of Directors; he was a director
1-14     of the Port of Freeport and a navigation district commissioner for
1-15     27 years; in addition, he enjoyed a 50-year membership with St.
1-16     John's Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the friendship of
1-18     this remarkable man will long miss his presence, and he will surely
1-19     be remembered with great affection and admiration for many years to
1-20     come; now, therefore, be it
1-21           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
1-22     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Marcus A. Weems and
1-23     extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:  to his wife,
1-24     Sarah Bancroft Weems; to his daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia A.
 2-1     and John Lepore and Susan D. and Bob Wendel; to his sons and
 2-2     daughter-in-law Marcus Weems, Jr., and Timothy and Marlene Weems;
 2-3     to his brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Weems and
 2-4     Alec and Bobbie Weems; to his sisters Zuleika E. Mitchell and
 2-5     Virginia P. Westmoreland; to his 10 grandchildren; to his nieces
 2-6     and nephews; and to the many other family and friends of this
 2-7     esteemed gentleman; and, be it further
 2-8           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-9     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-10     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-11     Marcus A. Weems.
