R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The impressive accomplishments of Texas A&M 1-2 University student and football player Dat Nguyen are indeed 1-3 commendable, and it is fitting that we reflect on his many 1-4 achievements; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born September 25, 1975, in Arkansas to Vietnamese 1-6 immigrants Ho and Tammy Nguyen, he moved with his family several 1-7 times before finally settling in Rockport, Texas; Mr. Nguyen grew 1-8 up and learned to play football there, eventually achieving the 1-9 distinction of being the first Asian American to play football for 1-10 Texas A&M University; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Mr. Nguyen was a four-year starter at linebacker, 1-12 and during that time he was the undisputed leader of the vaunted 1-13 "Wrecking Crew" defense; he set Texas A&M records with 50 1-14 consecutive starts and amassed an amazing 517 tackles, earning the 1-15 nickname "Double Digit Dat" for consistently notching 10 or more 1-16 tackles per game; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In addition to being a consensus All-American, 1-18 Mr. Nguyen's stellar play earned him the 1998 Lombardi Trophy as 1-19 the nation's top lineman and the Chuck Bednarik Defensive Player of 1-20 the Year Award, as well as a host of other national, Big 12, and 1-21 Southwest Conference awards throughout the course of his career; 1-22 and 1-23 WHEREAS, Mr. Nguyen graduated in August 1998 with a bachelor 1-24 of science degree in agricultural development; during his time in 2-1 College Station he garnered legions of fans worldwide, not only for 2-2 his athletic exploits but also for his invaluable community service 2-3 and indomitable character, and it is indeed appropriate that this 2-4 truly gifted young man be recognized at this time; now, therefore, 2-5 be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby honor Texas A&M University student and football 2-8 player Dat Nguyen and extend to him sincere best wishes for success 2-9 and happiness in the years to come; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-11 prepared for Mr. Nguyen as an expression of high regard by the 2-12 Texas House of Representatives.
