By Shields H.R. No. 127 76R5565 MDM-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The retirement of Trinity University President 1-2 Dr. Ronald K. Calgaard on May 31, 1999, concludes a dynamic 1-3 two-decade association with one of the state's finest educational 1-4 institutions; and 1-5 WHEREAS, During Dr. Calgaard's tenure, which began on July 1, 1-6 1979, Trinity University has achieved national recognition in 1-7 liberal arts and science education and has also made remarkable 1-8 gains in the quality of faculty, students, and academic programs; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, The university's endowment has more than quintupled 1-11 under Dr. Calgaard's stewardship, and academic, athletic, library, 1-12 and residential facilities have been greatly expanded and 1-13 renovated; for the past nine years, U.S. News and World Report's 1-14 College Guides have ranked this San Antonio university "number one 1-15 in the West"; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Dr. Calgaard graduated from Luther College with a 1-17 bachelor's degree and earned his master's and doctoral degrees from 1-18 the University of Iowa; he later served a postdoctoral fellowship 1-19 in Latin American studies in Santiago, Chile; before assuming the 1-20 presidency of Trinity University he was the vice chancellor for 1-21 academic affairs at the University of Kansas; and 1-22 WHEREAS, A respected voice in his field, he holds leadership 1-23 positions in a number of educational and professional 1-24 organizations, including positions on the boards of Saint Mary's 2-1 Hall, the Higher Education Council of San Antonio, the Air 2-2 University Board of Visitors, and the Associated Colleges of the 2-3 South, and he is currently chairman of the Southern Collegiate 2-4 Athletic Conference; and 2-5 WHEREAS, He and his wife, Genie, have enjoyed a strong and 2-6 lasting marriage and have been blessed with two children; the 2-7 couple are members of the First Presbyterian Church, where 2-8 Dr. Calgaard is a ruling elder; and 2-9 WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman's guidance has been crucial 2-10 to the development of Trinity University as a major institution of 2-11 higher learning, and he is truly worthy of special legislative 2-12 recognition for his efforts in this regard; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby pay tribute to Dr. Ronald K. Calgaard's 2-15 remarkable record of service as president of Trinity University and 2-16 his dedication to promoting excellence in higher education in the 2-17 State of Texas; and, be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-19 prepared for Dr. Calgaard as an expression of high regard by the 2-20 Texas House of Representatives.
