R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Mrs. Ona Bell Smith on January 1-2 6, 1999, at the age of 68, has brought a great loss to the family 1-3 and many friends of this beloved woman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A Vernon native, Mrs. Smith was born September 23, 1-5 1930, to Elizabeth Nolan and Bob Jackson; she later moved to 1-6 Hamilton Park, where she established a well-known catering service 1-7 and won praise for her delicious cakes; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Devoted to her family, Mrs. Smith enjoyed a strong 1-9 and lasting relationship with her husband, Roscoe Smith, and she 1-10 also received great joy and inspiration from her loving children, 1-11 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and 1-12 WHEREAS, A longtime member of Greenville Avenue Church of 1-13 Christ, this vital and valued member participated in various church 1-14 groups, including the Women's Bible Class, the Young at Heart 1-15 Group, and Food Ministries; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith gave generously of her time to the 1-17 Hamilton Park School PTA and to the Girl Scouts of America; she was 1-18 also active with the NAACP, steering her children toward 1-19 participation in the Youth Council NAACP; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the love and 1-21 friendship of Ona Bell Smith will long miss her presence, and she 1-22 will surely be remembered with great affection and admiration for 1-23 many years to come; now, therefore, be it 1-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-1 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Ona Bell Smith and 2-2 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her 2-3 husband, Roscoe Smith; to her children, Ronald Bryant, Kathy Nealy, 2-4 Arzo Smith, and Jannetta Harper; to her grandchildren, Toni Bryant, 2-5 Tracey Bryant, Charra and David Abron, Eddie Harper, Jr., and 2-6 Stephanie Harper; to her great-grandchildren, Patrick, Randall, and 2-7 Bryan Bryant, Kyle McCullum, David Abron, Jr., and Eddie Harper 2-8 III; to her aunt, Zinnie Lewis; and to the many other people whose 2-9 lives were touched by this esteemed woman; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-11 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas 2-12 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-13 Ona Bell Smith.
