R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of J. C. Coggins on December 27, 1998, 1-2 at the age of 90, has brought a great loss to the family, friends, 1-3 and community of this esteemed gentleman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born in Whitewright on August 13, 1908, Mr. Coggins 1-5 was a longtime resident of DeKalb; he served his country with 1-6 distinction during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Mr. Coggins began his tenure as an educator and 1-8 administrator in Bowie County in 1934; he was employed in 1-9 Springhill, DeKalb, Hubbard, and Malta schools before becoming the 1-10 Bowie County Superintendent of Schools, in which capacity he served 1-11 for 10 years; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Deeply committed to the welfare of his students, 1-13 Mr. Coggins distinguished himself as an educator of notable 1-14 character and ability, and in March 1998 the DeKalb Chamber of 1-15 Commerce presented Mr. Coggins and his wife with The Heart of the 1-16 Community Award--"The Noble"--for their lifetime dedication to the 1-17 area schools and surrounding communities; and 1-18 WHEREAS, In addition to performing his duties as 1-19 superintendent, this public-spirited individual lent his time and 1-20 talents to the American Legion and the Western Bowie County Retired 1-21 Teachers Association; he was also a member of First United 1-22 Methodist Church and served as treasurer for 27 years; and 1-23 WHEREAS, J. C. Coggins was a man of great faith and 1-24 compassion, and though his presence is deeply missed, his memory 2-1 will long endure in the hearts and minds of all who were privileged 2-2 to know him; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-4 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of J. C. Coggins and 2-5 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, 2-6 Lois Carroll Coggins; to his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and 2-7 Jeanne Coggins; to his granddaughter, Jennifer Coggins; to his 2-8 sister, Margaret Smith; to his nieces and nephews; and to the many 2-9 other people whose lives were touched by this devoted man; and, be 2-10 it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-13 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-14 J.
