R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join
 1-2     with millions of other Americans in commemorating the life of a man
 1-3     who has significantly influenced modern history, Malcolm X; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha,
 1-5     Nebraska, he embraced the Islamic teachings of Elijah Muhammad and
 1-6     as a young man changed his name to Malcolm X; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, With his wife, Betty, he worked diligently within
 1-8     the African-American community, encouraging education, economic
 1-9     stability, self-respect, and unity; a dynamic and outspoken leader,
1-10     he became one of the most widely recognized civil rights activists
1-11     of his day and devoted himself to promoting spiritual, physical,
1-12     and intellectual freedom for all African Americans; and
1-13           WHEREAS, During a pilgrimage to the Holy City of Mecca,
1-14     Malcolm X became known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz; he founded the
1-15     Organization of Afro-American Unity in 1964 and made it his
1-16     priority to ensure that the civil rights guaranteed by the United
1-17     States Constitution were afforded to all its citizenry; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Although his life was tragically cut short, the
1-19     memory of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz has continued to influence
1-20     critical thinking about societal issues as well as worldwide
1-21     concern for the human rights of all individuals; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Malcolm X is this year's honoree on the 1999 United
1-23     States Postal Service Black Heritage Stamp; the unveiling of the
1-24     stamp is presented by the United States Postal Service in
 2-1     conjunction with the artist and the Elaine Thornton Foundation for
 2-2     the Arts, Inc., and the stamp's creation will undoubtedly effect
 2-3     positive social awareness among those who view this lasting tribute
 2-4     to Malcolm X; now, therefore, be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-6     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Malcolm X/El-Hajj
 2-7     Malik El-Shabazz for his leadership and passionate commitment to
 2-8     freedom for people throughout the world.
