By Cook H.R. No. 184 76R5504 BE-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of lifelong Bastrop resident A. A. 1-2 "Sugar" Sanders on January 17, 1999, at the age of 80, has brought 1-3 a great loss to his family and many friends and to the community of 1-4 which he was such a valued member; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Sanders was born in Bastrop on October 26, 1918, 1-6 to William Edward and Ruby Waggoner Sanders; his family included 1-7 his sister, Velmarie, and his brothers, Monroe, Bryan, Waggoner, 1-8 and Curtis, and he had many wonderful memories of growing up in 1-9 their home on North Main and swimming and fishing with friends in 1-10 Piney Creek; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Mr. Sanders graduated from Bastrop High School in 1-12 1936 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II; and 1-13 WHEREAS, He returned to Bastrop after the war and in 1947 1-14 married the woman who would be his companion for the rest of his 1-15 life, his beloved wife, Nancy; they were blessed with five 1-16 children, Suzanne, Ed, Johnny, Cynthia, and Michele, and their 1-17 years together as a family were happy ones indeed, filled with much 1-18 love and laughter; and 1-19 WHEREAS, A respected businessman who operated a beer 1-20 distributorship, cafe, and grocery store, his sound advice, dynamic 1-21 energy, and good humor earned him a vast circle of friends, 1-22 including U.S. Congressman J. J. "Jake" Pickle, Will Rogers, Bud 1-23 DeGlandon, Cecil Long, and President Lyndon B. Johnson, for whom 1-24 Mr. Sanders served as Bastrop County campaign chairman during his 2-1 successful bid for U.S. senator; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The can-do spirit that so characterized Mr. Sanders 2-3 is perhaps best exemplified by a barbecue and fish fry he helped 2-4 organize; held for state and national pressmen, the event used 100 2-5 cast-iron washpots for cooking, and the Honorable Mr. Pickle still 2-6 refers to it as "the barbecue of the century"; and 2-7 WHEREAS, A member of Calvary Episcopal Church and the Masonic 2-8 Lodge, Mr. Sanders had a long and distinguished history of civic 2-9 service, including his 17-year tenure as U.S. postmaster of Bastrop 2-10 County; in addition, he served on the Bastrop City Council and the 2-11 Bastrop Housing Authority; he was president of the school board and 2-12 a 52-year member of the American Legion; and 2-13 WHEREAS, In 1986, this remarkable and enthusiastic Texan was 2-14 named "Man of the Year" by the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce; 2-15 Mr. Sanders was a man whose many years of good fellowship and 2-16 dedicated service to his community will long be remembered, and it 2-17 is indeed appropriate to honor his memory at this time; now, 2-18 therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th 2-20 Legislature of the State of Texas hereby pay special tribute to the 2-21 life of A. A. "Sugar" Sanders and extend sincere sympathy to the 2-22 members of his family: to his wife, Nancy; to his children, Suzanne 2-23 Sanders, Ed Sanders and his wife, Jane, Johnny Sanders and his 2-24 wife, Shawnda, Cynthia Cannon and her husband, Chris, and Michele 2-25 Sanders; to his brother, Curtis Sanders; to his grandchildren, 2-26 Darron, Tracy, Lindsay, Connley, and Morgan Rae Sanders, and Brad 2-27 Bentz; to his nephew, Terry Sanders; to his nieces, Charlotte 3-1 Dawson, Judy Sanders, and Belle Wood; and to the many other 3-2 relatives and friends of this esteemed man; and, be it further 3-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-4 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 3-5 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 3-6 A. A. "Sugar" Sanders.
