                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Student Government Association of Stephen F.
 1-2     Austin State University is visiting the State Capitol on February
 1-3     18, 1999, and this occasion provides an excellent opportunity to
 1-4     honor this notable organization and the distinguished academic
 1-5     institution it represents; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Originally a teachers college, the school opened its
 1-7     doors on September 18, 1923, with an enrollment of 158 students and
 1-8     a faculty of 18 instructors; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Since that time, Stephen F. Austin has flourished
1-10     and become one of the state's outstanding institutions of higher
1-11     education, and among the school's offerings to its students are a
1-12     plethora of undergraduate programs, numerous master's degree
1-13     programs, and a doctorate education program; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The school's talented faculty and staff are deeply
1-15     dedicated to the power and promise of education, and their ability
1-16     and involvement are aptly reflected in Stephen F. Austin's
1-17     graduation rate, which is one of the highest in Texas; and
1-18           WHEREAS, The university's 50-member Student Government
1-19     Association is a valuable instrument through which students express
1-20     concerns and suggestions to faculty and staff; the three branches
1-21     of this association are the executive, composed of student body
1-22     officers; the legislative, consisting of the Student Senate and
1-23     college senators; and the judicial, which includes the Supreme
1-24     Court; this esteemed organization serves as an important advocate
 2-1     for student ideas and opinions in the efficient operations of the
 2-2     university; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The year 1998 marked the 75th anniversary of Stephen
 2-4     F. Austin and this auspicious milestone served to reaffirm the
 2-5     university's commitment to educating and preparing its students for
 2-6     the challenges of the future; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University and its Student
 2-8     Government Association have played a significant role in the
 2-9     development of a well-educated citizenry in this state, and it is
2-10     indeed fitting that they be recognized at this time; now,
2-11     therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-13     Legislature hereby honor the Student Government Association of
2-14     Stephen F. Austin State University on the occasion of its visit to
2-15     the State Capitol and extend to its members sincere best wishes for
2-16     continued success and happiness; and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-18     prepared for the Student Government Association of Stephen F.
2-19     Austin State University as an expression of high regard by the
2-20     Texas House of Representatives.
