R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of the Honorable Jim Pearce Johnson on
1-2 January 6, 1998, at the age of 80, brought a great loss to the
1-3 family and many friends of this notable Texan; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born April 28, 1917, in Del Valle, Mr. Johnson was a
1-5 graduate of Austin High School and received a law degree from The
1-6 University of Texas at Austin in 1940; he served his nation with
1-7 distinction as a captain and flight instructor in the United States
1-8 Army Air Corps during World War II; and
1-9 WHEREAS, He practiced law for more than 50 years in Travis
1-10 County, and he ably represented the county in the Texas House of
1-11 Representatives from 1947 to 1957; Mr. Johnson was a dedicated
1-12 legislator who is remembered around the State Capitol for once
1-13 excusing himself from a doors-locked house chamber forum by
1-14 slipping out a second story window and navigating a narrow ledge to
1-15 the open window of then-speaker Durwood Manford's apartment; and
1-16 WHEREAS, In addition to being a rancher and two-term chairman
1-17 of the Parks and Wildlife Commission from 1969 to 1981, this
1-18 distinguished gentleman was also a member of the Del Valle School
1-19 Board and the Selective Service Draft Board, sat on the board of
1-20 directors of Cattlemen's State Bank, was former president and owner
1-21 of Import Motors, Incorporated, and Cen-Texas Nissan, and was a
1-22 50-year member of the Onion Creek Masonic Lodge; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Jim Pearce Johnson was widely regarded as a man of
1-24 ability and integrity and was an invaluable asset to his community,
2-1 and although he will be deeply missed, his remarkable legacy will
2-2 live on in the hearts and minds of all those fortunate enough to
2-3 have known him; now, therefore, be it
2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-5 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of our former colleague,
2-6 the Honorable Jim Pearce Johnson, and extend sincere sympathy to
2-7 the members of his family: to his wife, Marsha Johnson; to his
2-8 daughter, Jill Johnson Logan and her husband, Joe; to his son,
2-9 James M. Johnson and his wife, Karen; to his grandchildren, Gina
2-10 D'Amore and Hunter Johnson; and to his many other relatives and
2-11 friends; and, be it further
2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-14 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-15 Jim Pearce Johnson.
