                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The family and many friends of the Honorable Charles
 1-2     Alfred Murphy, Jr., were greatly saddened by his passing on March
 1-3     23, 1998, at the age of 79; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Murphy was born and raised in
 1-5     Houston; he was a proud graduate of the University of Houston and
 1-6     later joined the United States Marine Corps, serving with
 1-7     distinction as a pilot in Guadalcanal during World War II; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, After completing military service, he worked as a
 1-9     test pilot, then moved to Austin where he attended The University
1-10     of Texas School of Law; following in his esteemed father's
1-11     footsteps, he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives,
1-12     serving the residents of Harris County for four terms in 1947,
1-13     1951, 1953, and 1955; and
1-14           WHEREAS, This distinguished legislator co-authored the bill
1-15     founding Texas Southern University and was instrumental in
1-16     establishing an organization that later became the Republican Party
1-17     of Texas; following his departure from the legislature he served as
1-18     a lobbyist; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy was later appointed as director of the
1-20     Texas Aeronautics Commission, a post he held until retiring, and as
1-21     director he was highly successful at acquiring airports for small
1-22     towns across the Lone Star State; and
1-23           WHEREAS, In addition to being active with the National
1-24     Association of Regulatory Utility Commission, Mr. Murphy was also a
 2-1     valued member of the National Association of State Aviation
 2-2     Officers, serving as its president from 1972 to 1973; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Charles Alfred Murphy, Jr., was a man of courage and
 2-4     conviction, and his remarkable legacy of achievement ensures that
 2-5     he will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all those
 2-6     fortunate enough to have known him; now, therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-8     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Charles
 2-9     Alfred Murphy, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of
2-10     his family:  to his daughter, Etoile Anne Updyke and her husband,
2-11     Richard L. Updyke, Sr.; to his stepdaughter, Cissy Linder and her
2-12     husband, Don Linder; to his brother, Bruce Potts Murphy, Sr., and
2-13     his wife, Nancy Murphy; to his grandchildren, Richard L. Updyke,
2-14     Jr., and Elizabeth Anne Updyke; to his step-grandchildren, Jody
2-15     Linder, Dr. Jeffrey Linder and his wife, Sarah Linder, Julie Beam
2-16     and her husband, Joseph Beam; and to his many other relatives and
2-17     friends; and, be it further
2-18           RESOLVED, Than an official copy of this resolution be
2-19     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-20     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-21     Charles Alfred Murphy, Jr.
