R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The recent passing of the Honorable William Algee
 1-2     "Son" Shofner on February 8, 1999, at the age of 92, has greatly
 1-3     saddened the family and many friends of this esteemed gentleman;
 1-4     and
 1-5           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Shofner was born on June 7,
 1-6     1906, in Florence; he attended Baylor University and graduated from
 1-7     Southwestern University in Georgetown before earning his law degree
 1-8     from The University of Texas School of Law in 1931; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Mr. Shofner practiced criminal law in Temple until
1-10     1935, when he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives for
1-11     the 44th legislative session; in 1939, he returned to Temple, where
1-12     he continued practicing law, and during World War II he worked for
1-13     the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and
1-14           WHEREAS, In 1948, this distinguished public servant was
1-15     elected to the Texas Senate, in which he served as a member of the
1-16     51st and 52nd Texas legislatures; he later served on the Texas
1-17     Railroad Commission as a senior examiner until his retirement in
1-18     1971; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The life and career of the Honorable William A.
1-20     Shofner stand as an eloquent testimony to this notable gentleman's
1-21     drive, intelligence, and ability, and though he will be deeply
1-22     missed, his spirit will surely live on in the hearts and minds of
1-23     the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
1-24           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-1     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Honorable
 2-2     William Algee "Son" Shofner and extend sincere sympathy to the
 2-3     members of his family: to his wife, Mona Dunn Shofner; to his
 2-4     daughters, Carolyn McReynolds and Diana Lamphear; to his son, David
 2-5     Shofner; to his grandson, Arthur Kettelhut, Jr.; to his
 2-6     stepdaughter, Sharon Dunn Riley; to his stepson, Walker Dunn; to
 2-7     his granddaughter, Michele Edwards; to his nephew, Dr. Jim Mosely;
 2-8     to his cousin, the Honorable Jim Bomer; and to the many other
 2-9     relatives and friends of this beloved man; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-11     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-12     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-13     the Honorable William Algee "Son" Shofner.
