By Uher H.R. No. 214 76R6075 JBR-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of former state representative and 1-2 Bridge City resident W. T. Oliver on January 2, 1999, at the age of 1-3 72, has brought a great loss to the family and many friends of this 1-4 beloved individual; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born on a rice farm outside of Beaumont, Mr. Oliver 1-6 later moved to Bridge City where he was renowned for his 1-7 award-winning gumbo, his love of Cajun heritage, and his political 1-8 career; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Known as "Boss Cajun," this longtime Bridge City 1-10 resident entered the political life in 1956 and served the citizens 1-11 of Orange and Newton counties with the utmost distinction as a 1-12 member of the Texas House of Representatives during the 55th, 56th, 1-13 and 57th legislative sessions; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Upon his departure from office, Mr. Oliver founded 1-15 Oliver and Associates, a public relations firm dedicated to 1-16 assisting small businesses; he later served as head of the board of 1-17 directors at the Hughen Center in Port Arthur, helping to provide 1-18 opportunities for disabled children; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Well known as a steadfast advocate for Southeast 1-20 Texas veterans, he was chairman of the committee that created the 1-21 Golden Triangle Veterans Memorial Park in Port Arthur in 1992, and 1-22 he often spoke in behalf of veterans throughout the Lone Star 1-23 State; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the love and 2-1 friendship of W. T. Oliver will long miss his presence and 2-2 guidance, and he will surely be remembered with great affection and 2-3 admiration for many years to come; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-5 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable W. T. 2-6 Oliver and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: 2-7 to his wife, Ann Oliver; to his daughters, Sue Darcy, Becky 2-8 Rutledge, and Linda Brown; to his sons, W. T. "Tommy" Oliver, Jr., 2-9 Chris Oliver, and Miles A. Hall III; to his sisters, Lula Mae 2-10 Bailey and Bobbie Jacobs; to his brother, Russell Oliver; to his 15 2-11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and to the many other 2-12 relatives and friends of this distinguished gentleman; and, be it 2-13 further 2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-15 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-16 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-17 W. T. Oliver.
