                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of the Honorable Maurice S. Pipkin on
 1-2     December 21, 1997, at the age of 89, brought a great loss to the
 1-3     family and many friends of this notable Texan; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born March 2, 1908, in San Antonio, Mr. Pipkin
 1-5     graduated from Main Avenue High School in the Alamo City and
 1-6     received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&I in
 1-7     Kingsville; he began his professional career as a teacher and coach
 1-8     in the Brownsville public school system, eventually becoming
 1-9     principal of Brownsville High School; and
1-10           WHEREAS, After serving during World War II as a lieutenant in
1-11     the United States Navy, he returned to the Lone Star State and
1-12     became the dean of Texas Southmost College Vocational School;
1-13     Mr. Pipkin was also a practicing attorney in the firm of Wiech,
1-14     Lewis, and Pipkin in Brownsville and was one of the founding
1-15     partners of the city's El Centro Grocery Stores; and
1-16           WHEREAS, In 1952 this distinguished gentleman was elected to
1-17     the Texas House of Representatives, ably representing the citizens
1-18     of Cameron County until his retirement from the legislature in
1-19     1968; and
1-20           WHEREAS, While a representative, Mr. Pipkin served with
1-21     distinction as chairman of the Commerce and Manufacturing
1-22     Committee, as vice chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and as
1-23     a member of the Banks and Banking Committee, the Judiciary
1-24     Committee, the House Administration Committee, and the Legislative
 2-1     Budget Board, and he held the post of executive director of the
 2-2     Commission on Judicial Conduct from 1968 to 1984; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Maurice S. Pipkin was widely
 2-4     respected as a man of ability and integrity, and although he will
 2-5     be deeply missed, his spirit and legacy will live on in the hearts
 2-6     and minds of all those fortunate enough to have known him; now,
 2-7     therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-9     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of its former colleague
2-10     the Honorable Maurice S. Pipkin and extend sincere sympathy to the
2-11     members of his family: to his wife, Theresa Harrison Pipkin; to his
2-12     two sons and daughter-in-law, Gene Pipkin and Stephen Pipkin and
2-13     his wife Donna; to his four grandchildren, David, Stephen,
2-14     Stephanie, and Brian Pipkin; and to his many other relatives and
2-15     friends; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-17     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-18     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-19     Maurice S. Pipkin.
