                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join
 1-2     the citizens of Harlingen in the joyous celebration of Harlingen
 1-3     Day at the State Capitol on February 17, 1999; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Named for a city in the Netherlands, Harlingen is
 1-5     located in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley in the region known
 1-6     as the "Tropical Playground of Texas"; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The active and involved citizenry of this
 1-8     distinguished city are helping it to become an international leader
 1-9     in trade, government, education, agriculture, transportation, and
1-10     medicine; one of the valley's major medical facilities, the
1-11     Regional Academic Health Center, will be located in Harlingen and
1-12     it will undoubtedly greatly enhance the quality of health care
1-13     available for all valley citizens; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The thriving Harlingen business industry features
1-15     such highly successful companies as Fruit of the Loom, Lockheed
1-16     Martin, and Keystone International, and these notable employers
1-17     continually draw from a pool of skilled workers trained at Texas
1-18     State Technical College, one of the valley's premiere institutions
1-19     of higher learning; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Harlingen boasts many fine parks, sports fields,
1-21     golf courses, and jogging trails, and is also home to the Rio
1-22     Grande Valley Whitewings, a minor league baseball team; among the
1-23     city's unique attractions are the moving Iwo Jima War Memorial and
1-24     the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, which draws visitors from
 2-1     across the land and showcases the valley's unique wildlife and
 2-2     natural beauty; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, An outstanding place in which to live, work, and
 2-4     raise a family, Harlingen's continued expansion and economic growth
 2-5     ensure that this dynamic city will continue to be one of the Lone
 2-6     Star State's greatest assets for years to come; now, therefore, be
 2-7     it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-9     Legislature hereby recognize February 17, 1999, as Harlingen Day at
2-10     the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation a warm
2-11     welcome and best wishes for a memorable stay in Austin; and, be it
2-12     further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for the members of the Harlingen City Council as an
2-15     expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
