R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
 1-2     congratulate Dovie Greene Ellis on being named the recipient of the
 1-3     1998 Distinguished Former Odessan Award; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born and raised in Odessa, Ms. Ellis attended Odessa
 1-5     Junior College and continued her pursuit of academic excellence at
 1-6     The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, where she earned a
 1-7     bachelor of business administration degree in management; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Ms. Ellis is the first woman, the first African
 1-9     American, and the first member of an ethnic minority to hold the
1-10     post of deputy comptroller of public accounts for the State of
1-11     Texas, a post to which she was appointed by former Comptroller John
1-12     Sharp; during her exemplary 21-year tenure, she has been a highly
1-13     valued employee and has made significant contributions to the
1-14     organization; and
1-15           WHEREAS, This remarkable woman possesses a deep and committed
1-16     social conscience, and she is an active participant in many civic
1-17     and community groups as well as professional organizations,
1-18     including the board of Community Advocates for Teen Parents, the
1-19     NAACP, the Austin Area Urban League, and Executive Women in Texas
1-20     Government, and she also serves the congregation of Mount Zion
1-21     Baptist Church as a member of the finance committee and usher
1-22     board; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Ms. Ellis was chosen to receive the 1995 Outstanding
1-24     Women in Texas Government Award for Outstanding Professional
 2-1     Development, and she is an honoree of the Black United Fund of
 2-2     Texas, Inc.; in addition, she is a charter member and president
 2-3     emeritus of the Black American Comptroller Employees Association,
 2-4     Inc.; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Dovie Greene Ellis's professional achievements and
 2-6     commitment to volunteerism are truly an inspiration to her family
 2-7     and friends and to all who know her; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-9     Legislature hereby congratulate Dovie Greene Ellis on her receipt
2-10     of the 1998 Distinguished Former Odessan Award and extend to her
2-11     sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
2-12     further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for Ms. Ellis as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-15     House of Representatives.
