R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of George Faithon Lucas on April 24,
 1-2     1998, at the age of 79, brought a great loss to the family and many
 1-3     friends of this esteemed gentleman; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Lucas was born August 20, 1918,
 1-5     in Dallas to the late Faithon Panteli Lucas, Sr., and Mersina
 1-6     Togani Lucas; he was an honors graduate of North Dallas High School
 1-7     in 1936 and later studied chemical engineering at Southern
 1-8     Methodist University and Texas A&M University; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, In 1938, he returned from college to devote his time
1-10     and talents to the family businesses of Lucas Farms in Mesquite and
1-11     the Lucas B&B restaurant in Dallas and at his father's behest ran
1-12     the farm during World War II; Mr. Lucas was active in the Mesquite
1-13     community and was friends with several of the town's founding
1-14     fathers, who served as his mentors in the ways of Mesquite
1-15     politics; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Lucas Farms prospered greatly
1-17     under his direction, growing to become one of the largest dairies
1-18     in Texas; at one time, it included more than 4,000 acres and 600
1-19     milk cows; one of the crowning achievements in Mr. Lucas's life
1-20     occurred in the early 1990s when his commitment to conserving
1-21     Mesquite land led him to play a vital role in persuading Texas A&M
1-22     University to relocate North Texas Regional Training Center to
1-23     Mesquite; and
1-24           WHEREAS, A valued member of the American Milk Producers
 2-1     Association, Mr. Lucas was active in the political arena as a
 2-2     lobbyist for farmers; a respected civic figure, he was presented
 2-3     the Elks Lodge's Citizen of the Year Award in recognition of his
 2-4     diligent work on behalf of the Mesquite community; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, George Faithon Lucas was a truly humble man as well
 2-6     as a beloved role model, and although he will be deeply missed, his
 2-7     remarkable legacy and spirit will live on in the hearts and minds
 2-8     of all those fortunate enough to have known him; now, therefore, be
 2-9     it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-11     Legislature hereby honor the memory of George Faithon Lucas and
2-12     extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
2-13     daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Lucas Bass and John R. Bass, Sr.;
2-14     to his grandson, John R. Bass, Jr., and his wife, Eloise Barry
2-15     Bass; to his granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Bass; to his brother
2-16     and sister-in-law, Faithon P. Lucas, Jr., and Evelyn Dees Lucas; to
2-17     his sisters and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Faithon Lucas, Mary Lucas
2-18     Barunes, Helen Lucas Pappas, and Pete H.  Pappas; to his
2-19     sister-in-law, Ethel Zotos Lucas; and to his 17 nieces and nephews;
2-20     and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-22     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-23     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-24     George Faithon Lucas.
