R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On February 23, 1999, hundreds of librarians and 1-2 library supporters from the Texas Library Association will visit 1-3 Austin to celebrate Texas Library Day at the State Capitol; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Founded in 1902 to promote library service in Texas, 1-5 the Texas Library Association is a nonprofit, educational 1-6 organization with more than 7,500 members, including school, 1-7 public, academic, and special librarians, as well as library 1-8 supporters, local officials, school administrators, and members of 1-9 the library vendor community; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The importance of libraries as a community 1-11 educational resource is evidenced by the over 100 million Texans 1-12 who visit them each year, borrowing in excess of 70 million items; 1-13 on the approximately 6,000 campuses in the Lone Star State, there 1-14 are over 4,700 school librarians serving more than four million 1-15 students and school personnel; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In Texas, libraries annually assist nearly 90,000 1-17 citizens in learning to read; the efforts of these vital 1-18 institutions and the members of the Texas Library Association in 1-19 promoting literacy and library service are indeed commendable, and 1-20 it is a privilege to honor them at this time; now, therefore, be it 1-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 1-22 Legislature hereby recognize February 23, 1999, as Texas Library 1-23 Day at the State Capitol and extend sincere best wishes to all 1-24 those associated with this worthy event.
