R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The members of the Texas House of Representatives 1-2 are proud to honor Charles Butt for his myriad accomplishments and 1-3 for being recognized as the 1999 Border Texan of the Year; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Butt attended the University of Pennsylvania's 1-5 Wharton School, where he garnered a bachelor of science degree in 1-6 economics, and he continued his education by completing Harvard 1-7 Business School's Advanced Management Program; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Since 1971, this noteworthy gentleman has been the 1-9 chairman and chief executive officer of H-E-B Foods, the 12th 1-10 largest food retailer in the U.S., and during his tenure as head of 1-11 the company, sales have increased from $250 million to $7 billion, 1-12 while the number of employees has risen from 4,500 to 45,000; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Under Mr. Butt's leadership, H-E-B's community 1-14 commitment includes an annual donation of five percent of its 1-15 pre-tax earnings to select charitable organizations; in addition, 1-16 H-E-B provides support for Texas communities by donating more than 1-17 15 million pounds of food to Texas food banks and by linking its 1-18 stores with more than 1,500 Texas schools, thereby creating a 1-19 unique partnership that promotes educational goals; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Mr. Butt has also contributed his capable guidance 1-21 and progressive ideas to the citizens of Texas as a member of the 1-22 development board of the University of Texas Health Science Center 1-23 at San Antonio and the coordinating board of the Texas College and 1-24 University System; and 2-1 WHEREAS, An outstanding leader, he served as chairman of the 2-2 1981 M. D. Anderson Cancer Hospital Annual Campaign and is the 2-3 founding chairman of The University of Texas Marine Science 2-4 Institute Advisory Council; he is a member of the board of 2-5 directors at the Food Marketing Institute and was the director of 2-6 Texas Commerce Bancshares from 1974 until 1989; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Among his many accolades, Mr. Butt has received the 2-8 Conservation Award from the Winedale Historic Center and the Amanda 2-9 Cartwright Taylor Award from the San Antonio Conservation Society; 2-10 he has also received the 1996 Mr. South Texas Award, the Greater 2-11 San Antonio Chamber of Commerce's 1996 Freeman Award, and the 2-12 Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund's 1998 Corporate 2-13 Social Responsibility Award; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Charles Butt has provided many years of valuable 2-15 service to the Lone Star State, contributing to the improvement of 2-16 our quality of life, and it is indeed a privilege to honor him at 2-17 this time; now, therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-19 Legislature hereby commend Charles Butt for his fine work in behalf 2-20 of the citizens of Texas and congratulate him on his receipt of the 2-21 1999 Border Texan of the Year Award; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-23 prepared for Mr. Butt as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-24 House of Representatives.
