                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The month of February has traditionally been
 1-2     observed as African American Heritage Month and the Austin
 1-3     Independent School District (AISD) continues to play a significant
 1-4     role in observing this important occasion each year; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The district has planned a number of activities
 1-6     designed to feature the outstanding influences and contributions
 1-7     that African Americans have made throughout the history of our
 1-8     state and nation in such diverse areas as politics, culture,
 1-9     religion, and education; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Highlights of the district's events include African
1-11     American Parent Involvement Day, sponsored by the Austin Alliance
1-12     of Black School Educators, and the 10th annual African American
1-13     Read-in-Chain at many elementary schools, for which community and
1-14     professional organizations, churches, libraries, and interested
1-15     citizens will host read-in sessions; and
1-16           WHEREAS, This month's special designation also provides AISD
1-17     and community and civic organizations with an opportunity to
1-18     increase public awareness of the many notable accomplishments of
1-19     African Americans; and
1-20           WHEREAS, The theme for 1999's 74th annual celebration of
1-21     African American Heritage Month is "The Legacy of African American
1-22     Leadership for the Present and the Future," and AISD is part of the
1-23     broad-based community support being mobilized nationwide; and
1-24           WHEREAS, AISD personnel recognize that reaching out to our
 2-1     community is the highest duty of individuals in  a civilized
 2-2     society, and that duty is only realized by a devoted, long-standing
 2-3     commitment to our communities and the residents of those
 2-4     communities; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Government, civic, social, and religious
 2-6     institutions annually recognize the remarkable contributions of
 2-7     African Americans during African American Heritage Month, and AISD
 2-8     is an important contributor to this joyful celebration; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Combining pride in the achievements of the past with
2-10     a desire to provide for a brighter future, AISD's participation in
2-11     African American Heritage Month helps preserve and cherish a unique
2-12     culture, and it is indeed fitting to recognize that organization's
2-13     efforts in this regard; now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-15     Legislature hereby commend the Austin Independent School District
2-16     and its outstanding staff for their endeavors in celebrating
2-17     African American Heritage Month and the countless contributions
2-18     made to Texas and the nation by African Americans; and, be it
2-19     further
2-20           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-21     prepared for the Austin Independent School District as an
2-22     expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
