R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The 85th birthday of a notable Texan is truly an 1-2 event worthy of special recognition, and on March 2, 1999, Ruth 1-3 Margaret "Sue" Blackwell Bock of New Braunfels will mark this 1-4 memorable milestone in her life; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mrs. Bock was born March 2, 1914, in 1-6 Lockhart and her birthday is also celebrated by many Lone Star 1-7 citizens as Texas Independence Day; in the sixth grade she was 1-8 given the nickname of "Sue" and it has stuck with her throughout 1-9 the years; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Her father's career necessitated that the family 1-11 move numerous times across Texas and the United States during her 1-12 childhood and, after attending 13 different schools, she graduated 1-13 from Allentown High School in Allentown, Pennsylvania; following 1-14 her graduation, Mrs. Bock moved back to her native Lockhart where 1-15 she began working as a beautician and, at the age of 18, was named 1-16 "Miss Lockhart"; and 1-17 WHEREAS, On August 8, 1939, she married her former sixth 1-18 grade boyfriend, Bennie W. Bock, with whom she shared a loving 1-19 union for many years until his passing in 1990; the couple and 1-20 their two-year-old son moved in 1944 to New Braunfels where 1-21 Mr. Bock ran a highly successful Ford dealership and Mrs. Bock was 1-22 active as president of the PTA and with the United Fund, Easter 1-23 Seals, and many other worthy causes; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Mrs. Bock's family has a rich history of public 2-1 service, beginning with her great-grandfather, who was a member of 2-2 the House of Representatives in the 19th Texas Legislature, and 2-3 spanning to her son, Bennie Bock II, who was a house member from 2-4 1972 to 1982; to this end, this remarkable woman has been hostess 2-5 to president's first ladies, United States and Texas senators and 2-6 representatives, and Texas governors and their wives; and 2-7 WHEREAS, In addition to playing cards and making Christmas 2-8 tree ornaments, Mrs. Bock is active with the Sophienburg Museum and 2-9 Archives and the Hummel Museum, has served as secretary and 2-10 treasurer of the Hummel Club, and as parliamentarian of the 40's 2-11 Club, for which she has also held the posts of president, 2-12 secretary, and membership chairman; she was honored by the New 2-13 Braunfels Chamber of Commerce as Most Outstanding Volunteer for 2-14 Community Service in the Historic Preservation Field in 1998 and by 2-15 the Hummel Museum as Volunteer of the Year in 1998; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Ruth Margaret "Sue" Blackwell Bock has led a life 2-17 full of many happy times and cherished memories and she is truly an 2-18 inspiration to her family, friends, and fellow Texans; now, 2-19 therefore, be it 2-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-21 Legislature hereby honor Ruth Margaret "Sue" Blackwell Bock on the 2-22 occasion of her 85th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes 2-23 for continued success and happiness; and, be it further 2-24 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-25 prepared for Mrs. Bock as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-26 House of Representatives.
