                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas A&M University football team earned its
 1-2     first Big 12 Conference championship in a thrilling 36-33 double
 1-3     overtime victory over the Kansas State Wildcats, and this
 1-4     remarkable triumph is indeed worthy of special praise; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Played in the TransWorld Dome in St. Louis,
 1-6     Missouri, before more than 60,000 fans and a national television
 1-7     audience, this exhilarating battle saw the mighty Texas Aggies,
 1-8     under the masterful guidance of Head Coach R. C. Slocum and his
 1-9     coaching staff, claim the conference crown and snap the highly
1-10     regarded Wildcats' 19-game winning streak; and
1-11           WHEREAS, The road to the 1998 title game proved to be a
1-12     remarkable show of athletic prowess for the Aggies, who played a
1-13     schedule filled with many top-rated national foes and a Big 12
1-14     South division stacked with formidable opponents; one of their most
1-15     compelling regular season victories was a 28-21 defeat of then
1-16     second-ranked University of Nebraska that ended the Cornhuskers'
1-17     19-game winning streak and marked the highest ranked team the
1-18     Aggies had ever beaten; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Texas A&M finished with an 11-3 record, achieving
1-20     that number of wins for only the third time in school history, and
1-21     the team capped off the campaign with an impressive showing in the
1-22     1999 Nokia Sugar Bowl against the Ohio State Buckeyes; and
1-23           WHEREAS, This stellar season was the culmination of many
1-24     hours of hard work and dedication by the members of the Texas A&M
 2-1     University football team, and as they look back with pride and
 2-2     satisfaction on their Big 12 championship, it is indeed fitting to
 2-3     pay tribute to them for their outstanding accomplishment; now,
 2-4     therefore, be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-6     Legislature hereby honor the 1998 Texas A&M University football
 2-7     team on winning its first Big 12 Conference championship and extend
 2-8     to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
 2-9     continued success in the years to come; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-11     prepared  for Head Coach R. C.  Slocum and the members of the Texas
2-12     A&M University football team as an expression of high regard by the
2-13     Texas House of Representatives.
