No. 313 76R8100 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Stephenville High School Yellow Jackets 1-2 resoundingly defeated the La Marque High School Cougars 34-7 to 1-3 claim the 1998 University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 4A 1-4 Division II high school football state championship, and this 1-5 outstanding achievement is truly deserving of special recognition; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, Head Coach Art Briles and his staff ably prepared 1-8 the Yellow Jackets throughout the course of the 1998 season, with 1-9 each game showcasing the team's vaunted offense and stingy defense; 1-10 the triumph over La Marque High school in the title game capped off 1-11 a 15-1 season and secured their third state championship of the 1-12 decade, improving their record in the 1990s to a stellar 107-21-1; 1-13 and 1-14 WHEREAS, During the 1998 season, the mighty Yellow Jacket 1-15 offense, fueled largely by an air attack that featured the 1-16 dangerous tandem of receiver Cody Cardwell and quarterback Kelan 1-17 Luker, set the national record for total offense with an astounding 1-18 8,664 yards and the state record for points scored in a season with 1-19 712; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Mr. Cardwell also set a national record with 2,427 1-21 receiving yards and a state record with 112 receptions, as well as 1-22 setting the mark of most receiving yards in a playoff game with 285 1-23 yards and most receiving yards for a career with 4,241 yards; 1-24 Mr. Luker compiled the state records for passing yards in a season 2-1 with 4,700 and in a career with 8,297 yards; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Along with teammates Cardwell and Luker, Rob Lilly 2-3 was named first team All-State; Felix Alvarado and Chris Evatt were 2-4 selected to the All-State second team, while J. W. Boren, Clayton 2-5 Harmon, and Jack Hodges earned honorable mention All-State 2-6 distinction; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Achieving such a lofty team goal required each of 2-8 the team's talented athletes to perform to the utmost of their 2-9 abilities; the state crown is an apt reflection of the team's 2-10 dedication and competitive spirit and is an appropriate culmination 2-11 of many hours of hard work and training; and 2-12 WHEREAS, The young champions of the Stephenville High School 2-13 Yellow Jackets football team have distinguished themselves as 2-14 formidable competitors, and it is indeed fitting to pay tribute to 2-15 them for their impressive accomplishments at this time; now, 2-16 therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-18 Legislature hereby honor the members of the Stephenville High 2-19 School Yellow Jackets on their UIL Class 4A Division II high school 2-20 football state championship and extend to them sincere best wishes 2-21 for continued success; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-23 prepared for Head Coach Art Briles and the Stephenville High School 2-24 Yellow Jackets as an expression of high regard by the Texas House 2-25 of Representatives.
