                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Dalton Cornelius Hartnett, at the
 1-2     age of 82, on September 18, 1998, has brought a great loss to the
 1-3     family and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Dr. Hartnett was born at his
 1-5     family's home in Weatherford on October 29, 1915; after graduating
 1-6     from Laneri High School, he was the valedictorian of his 1936
 1-7     graduating class at St. Edward's University in Austin, and he
 1-8     graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis
 1-9     in 1940; and
1-10           WHEREAS, This patriotic man served his country in the United
1-11     States Armed Forces from 1941 to 1945, ultimately earning the rank
1-12     of major and receiving the Legion of Merit and Soldier's Medal for
1-13     his service; he had the fine distinction of serving in Guam and
1-14     Saipan as the flight surgeon to the 3rd Photo Reconnaissance
1-15     Squadron, a squadron that flew over Japan photographing the B-29
1-16     bombing missions; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Dr. Hartnett started his private medical practice as
1-18     a senior instructor at the St.  Louis University School of Medicine
1-19     in the obstetrics/gynecology department; he later served on the
1-20     medical staff of St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Worth, including
1-21     three years as chief of staff, and worked at Harris Hospital and
1-22     All Saints Hospital; through the course of his career, Dr. Hartnett
1-23     delivered over 3,000 babies and never lost a mother or child; and
1-24           WHEREAS, A dedicated physician, Dr. Hartnett was a member of
 2-1     numerous medical societies and associations, including the American
 2-2     Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Tarrant County Medical
 2-3     Society, the Texas State Medical Society, the Texas Association of
 2-4     Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Southern Medical Association, the
 2-5     American Medical Association, and the Retired Physicians Guild; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, He was an active member of St.  Andrews Catholic
 2-7     Church and was associated with a number of Catholic organizations,
 2-8     such as the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Physicians Guild, and
 2-9     Serra International; he was also a Knight of the Grand Cross of the
2-10     Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem; and
2-11           WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Dr. Hartnett enjoyed a strong
2-12     and lasting relationship with his wife of 49 years, Maryelaine
2-13     Catherine Pung Hartnett, until her passing on September 12, 1998;
2-14     well known for his love of the outdoors, Dr. Hartnett was a
2-15     lifelong rancher, an avid fisherman, and a hunter; and
2-16           WHEREAS, Dr. Dalton Cornelius Hartnett was a man of great
2-17     faith and compassion, and those who were privileged to share his
2-18     friendship and love will long miss his presence; now, therefore, be
2-19     it
2-20           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-21     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Dalton Cornelius
2-22     Hartnett and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family:
2-23     to his sons, Leo Joseph Hartnett; Dalton Dennis Hartnett, and his
2-24     wife, Brenda; James Peter Hartnett; and Brian Donald Hartnett; to
2-25     his brother, the Reverend Monsignor Donald A. Hartnett; to Linda
2-26     Roberts Hartnett; and to the many other people whose lives this
2-27     esteemed man has touched; and, be it further
 3-1           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 3-2     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
 3-3     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 3-4     Dr. Dalton Cornelius Hartnett.
