R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, March is National Women's History Month, and March 1-2 9, 1999, is Texas Women Veteran's Day, and these events offer a 1-3 timely opportunity to honor the late Lieutenant Kara Hultgreen and 1-4 to recognize her achievements; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A graduate of San Antonio's Alamo Heights High 1-6 School, this exemplary young woman earned a bachelor's degree in 1-7 aerospace engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 1-8 1987 before joining the United States Navy; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The first Navy female pilot to qualify in the F-14, 1-10 Lieutenant Hultgreen logged more than 1,000 hours piloting the A-6 1-11 bomber and the EA-6B Prowler, all the while lobbying for an 1-12 opportunity to train in combat aircraft; in July 1993 she fulfilled 1-13 her longtime dream of becoming a fighter pilot, qualifying after a 1-14 successful night landing on the USS Constellation; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Hultgreen's life was tragically cut short 1-16 on October 25, 1994, at the age of 29, while piloting a Navy F-14A 1-17 fighter plane; at the time of her passing, she had logged 217 hours 1-18 in the pilot seat of the F-14 and had made more than 50 day and 1-19 night landings on aircraft carriers; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Kara Hultgreen's tenacity and determination helped 1-21 her to achieve her goals and dreams, and as we celebrate the role 1-22 of women in our country's illustrious history, it is truly 1-23 appropriate to remember this extraordinary individual and her many 1-24 accomplishments; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-2 Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the memory of Lieutenant 2-3 Kara Hultgreen, whose dedication as a member of the United States 2-4 Navy remains an inspiration to women throughout the armed forces; 2-5 and, be it further 2-6 RESOLVED, That when the Texas House of Representatives 2-7 adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lieutenant Kara Hultgreen.
