                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
 1-2     Dr. Daeshik Kim for his many years as a leader in education and
 1-3     sports administration; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A native of Korea, Dr. Kim moved to the United
 1-5     States in 1960 and has since been a pioneer in the teaching of
 1-6     martial arts in this country; he has furthered his education at a
 1-7     number of estimable academic institutions and holds a bachelor's
 1-8     degree from Georgia State University and a doctorate of education
 1-9     degree from the University of Georgia; and
1-10           WHEREAS, A graduate from the Korean Yudo College, Dr. Kim is
1-11     one of the highest ranking martial arts instructors in the world
1-12     and has served with many of the sport's most prestigious
1-13     organizations; he has mastered a variety of martial arts
1-14     disciplines, holding the rank of ninth degree black belt in Tae
1-15     Kwon Do and eighth degree black belts in both Japanese Judo and
1-16     Korean Hapkido; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Dr. Kim recently retired from The University of
1-18     Texas at Austin,  where he was an associate professor of
1-19     kinesiology and health education for nearly a quarter-century; he
1-20     founded that institution's martial arts program and, as a
1-21     grandmaster in the sport, has spent the past 22 years instructing
1-22     and coordinating its Judo and Tae Kwon Do programs, certifying many
1-23     of his students as black belts; and
1-24           WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman has published 80 academic
 2-1     and professional papers in numerous journals and authored 25 books
 2-2     on physical education and martial arts; he also served as director
 2-3     of Far Eastern studies in the doctoral program in sports management
 2-4     at the United States Sports Academy in Mobile, Alabama, which
 2-5     recognized him with an honorary doctor of philosophy degree; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Dr. Kim has been instrumental in the advancement of
 2-7     sports management and martial arts programs in the United States,
 2-8     and it is indeed fitting to pay tribute to him for his significant
 2-9     achievements at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-11     Legislature hereby honor Dr. Daeshik Kim for his many years of
2-12     dedication to education and sports administration and extend to him
2-13     sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
2-14     further
2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16     prepared for Dr. Daeshik Kim as an expression of high regard by the
2-17     Texas House of Representatives.
