                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The retirement of Tommy May from the Travis County
 1-2     sheriff's office brings to a close 42 years of dedicated law
 1-3     enforcement in Texas, and his longtime commitment to the citizens
 1-4     of Texas is indeed worthy of special praise; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born near Lubbock, Mr. May joined the Department of
 1-6     Public Safety (DPS) in 1956 and worked there until 1987; he joined
 1-7     the Travis County sheriff's office where he started an auto theft
 1-8     investigation unit before his retirement in January 1999; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, During Mr. May's first 13 years with DPS he
1-10     patrolled South Texas; after he moved to Austin he was assigned to
1-11     investigate auto thefts in 28 Central Texas counties, and it was in
1-12     that assignment that he established himself as the state's top
1-13     expert on auto theft and recovery; over the course of his 32-year
1-14     career with DPS, Mr. May recovered more than 700 stolen vehicles;
1-15     and
1-16           WHEREAS, While working for the Travis County sheriff's office
1-17     he continued his success; the highlights of his career in law
1-18     enforcement include the recovery of 69 cars in a single operation
1-19     and the apprehension of a suspect in 20 bank robberies in
1-20     California; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Throughout his career Mr. May has received support
1-22     from his wife, Patsy May, and during retirement he looks forward to
1-23     swimming, walking, woodworking, and watching his two grandsons play
1-24     basketball; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Known by his colleagues as a "master" at auto theft
 2-2     investigation, Tommy May leaves a record of success and excellence
 2-3     that law enforcement officers in Texas can respect, and although
 2-4     his dedication, conviction, and remarkable leadership will be
 2-5     sorely missed by his colleagues, his many years of service will not
 2-6     soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-8     Legislature hereby commend Tommy May for his achievements and
 2-9     extraordinary service to the State of Texas in his career as a law
2-10     enforcement officer and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
2-11     years to come; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13     prepared for Mr. May as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-14     House of Representatives.
