R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Johnny Moore achieved outstanding success as a 1-2 basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs and, since completing 1-3 his career on the court, has made many significant contributions to 1-4 the city of San Antonio; and 1-5 WHEREAS, During his collegiate basketball career with The 1-6 University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Moore started every game for 1-7 each of his four seasons, and while wearing the orange and white he 1-8 set a Southwest Conference record for most assists in a single 1-9 game, led the conference in assists in two of his seasons, became 1-10 the all-time assist leader in Longhorn history, and was twice named 1-11 to the All-Southwest Conference First Team; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Blessed with exceptional quickness and court 1-13 awareness, Mr. Moore set his sights on playing in the NBA, and his 1-14 outstanding career with the San Antonio Spurs spanned the decade of 1-15 the 1980s; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Mr. Moore was affectionately called "Junior" by his 1-17 San Antonio teammates, and in the early 1980s he was one of the 1-18 NBA's premier point guards, leading the league in assists during 1-19 the 1981-1982 campaign and finishing in the top five among assist 1-20 leaders in three other seasons; and 1-21 WHEREAS, In 1985 he was stricken with desert fever, a 1-22 life-threatening form of meningitis, but Mr. Moore overcame this 1-23 serious illness and returned to play with the Spurs for 112 more 1-24 games, completing his career as the franchise's all-time assist 2-1 leader and second all-time leader in steals; and 2-2 WHEREAS, In recognition of his contributions to the 2-3 organization, Johnny Moore's jersey number "00" was retired on 2-4 March 20, 1998, joining those of fellow Spurs greats James Silas 2-5 and George Gervin; he was also selected to the Spurs 25th 2-6 Anniversary Team; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Mr. Moore became a Spurs community relations 2-8 representative in 1993, and since that time he has made more than 2-9 300 appearances in the San Antonio area, delivering inspirational 2-10 messages to schoolchildren, retirees, military personnel, and civic 2-11 clubs; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Johnny Moore has set standards as a professional 2-13 athlete and citizen to which all can aspire, and it is truly 2-14 appropriate that this remarkable individual be honored at this 2-15 time; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-17 Legislature hereby pay tribute to Johnny Moore for his many 2-18 significant accomplishments on and off the basketball floor and 2-19 extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and 2-20 happiness; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-22 prepared for Mr. Moore as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-23 House of Representatives.
