R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, On March 16, 1999, many proud residents of
 1-2     Montgomery County will travel to Austin to celebrate Montgomery
 1-3     County Day at the State Capitol; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, The Congress of the Republic of Texas established
 1-5     Montgomery County in December 1837 from portions of Washington
 1-6     County and named it for the city of Montgomery, which was the
 1-7     area's largest settlement; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Many notable Texans resided in Montgomery County
 1-9     during the days of the Republic and early statehood, including
1-10     I. L. G. Strickland, who was one of the area's first ministers,
1-11     Judge Nathaniel Hart Davis, and Charles Bellinger Tate Stewart, who
1-12     is renowned as a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence,
1-13     as the first Texas secretary of state, and as a representative of
1-14     Montgomery County at the 1845 Constitutional Convention; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The county seat is the city of Conroe, a town of
1-16     nearly 40,000 residents, which is home to the Heritage Museum of
1-17     Montgomery County and the historic and still producing Conroe Oil
1-18     Field; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The gently rolling terrain of Montgomery County lies
1-20     nestled on the edge of the Big Thicket, and its fertile soil is
1-21     ideal for the production of a number of agricultural commodities,
1-22     such as timber, hay, blueberries, and peaches, and for raising
1-23     cattle and horses; and
1-24           WHEREAS, Montgomery County is abundant with a variety of
 2-1     natural wonders, and the many area golf courses, resorts, and
 2-2     marinas on Lake Conroe, as well as the Sam Houston National Forest
 2-3     and Jones State Forest, make the area ideal for those who enjoy
 2-4     fishing, hunting, and hiking; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, The Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), which
 2-6     was founded in 1982, is also located in Montgomery County; a
 2-7     nonprofit, independent organization whose goal is to foster
 2-8     scientific research and technology development, HARC is currently
 2-9     focused on issues relating to the environment, energy, medicine,
2-10     and information technology; and
2-11           WHEREAS, A unique blend of urban and rural elements,
2-12     Montgomery County has been careful to preserve its rich cultural
2-13     heritage while keeping pace with the changing needs of its
2-14     citizens, providing excellent schools, health care, and many modern
2-15     conveniences to those who call it home; and
2-16           WHEREAS, The residents of Montgomery County are justifiably
2-17     proud of their fine community and the many positive qualities that
2-18     make it an outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a
2-19     family; in light of the citizenry's many contributions to the State
2-20     of Texas, and its significant place in our state's history as the
2-21     official birthplace of the Lone Star Flag, it is indeed appropriate
2-22     that Montgomery County be given special legislative recognition at
2-23     this time; now, therefore, be it
2-24           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-25     Legislature hereby recognize March 16, 1999, as Montgomery County
2-26     Day at the State Capitol and join with the citizens of Montgomery
2-27     County in paying tribute to one of Texas' finest counties; and, be
 3-1     it further
 3-2           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 3-3     prepared for Montgomery County as a commemoration of this occasion
 3-4     and as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
 3-5     Representatives.
