No. 417 76R9521 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, It has been 10 years since the tragic death of Mark 1-2 Kilroy on March 14, 1989, and, as we pay tribute to his memory on 1-3 this day, it is fitting that we note the important legacy he left 1-4 behind, for this year also marks the 10th anniversary of the 1-5 establishment of the foundation created in his honor; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The son of Jim and Helen Kilroy, this outstanding 1-7 young man graduated from Santa Fe High School in Galveston County 1-8 and also attended Tarleton State University before transferring to 1-9 The University of Texas at Austin, where he was enrolled as a 1-10 pre-med student; and 1-11 WHEREAS, While visiting Matamoros, Mexico, during spring 1-12 break, Mark was kidnapped and killed by a group of individuals who 1-13 were involved in narcotics trafficking; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In the wake of this terrible tragedy, Mr. and 1-15 Mrs. Kilroy created the Mark Kilroy Foundation to aid individuals 1-16 and organizations striving to prevent substance abuse; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The foundation is devoted to drug education, 1-18 prevention, and rehabilitation; in addition to providing funds to 1-19 residential treatment facilities, it also supports two annual 1-20 four-year scholarships for deserving students and, together with 1-21 the Santa Fe and Hitchcock school districts and other 1-22 organizations, the foundation is a sponsor for the Substance Abuse 1-23 Free Environment program; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Kilroy have shared their message with 2-1 their fellow Texans through speaking engagements across the state, 2-2 and Mr. Kilroy also authored the book Sacrifice, the proceeds of 2-3 which go to support the work of the foundation; and 2-4 WHEREAS, During the years since their son's passing, Jim and 2-5 Helen Kilroy, and all those associated with the Mark Kilroy 2-6 Foundation, have had a profound effect on the lives of countless 2-7 Texans, and it is most appropriate, as we pause for a moment to 2-8 remember this remarkable young man, that we commend the significant 2-9 efforts of the Mark Kilroy Foundation and its founders; now, 2-10 therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mark Kilroy and 2-13 recognize the Mark Kilroy Foundation for its many significant 2-14 contributions in the battle against substance abuse; and, be it 2-15 further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-17 prepared for the members of Mr. Kilroy's family and that when the 2-18 Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in 2-19 memory of Mark Kilroy.
