                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Dr. Michael M. Duffy of San Antonio has brought
 1-2     great honor to the State of Texas through a long and distinguished
 1-3     medical career, and it is a privilege to bestow on this outstanding
 1-4     individual the title of honorary Texan; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Though Dr. Duffy was born in Washington, D.C., on
 1-6     December 28, 1931, he and many members of his extended family have
 1-7     called Texas home since 1973; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, After graduating from high school in Bethesda,
 1-9     Maryland,  Dr. Duffy entered the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and
1-10     later transferred to the U.S. Army; with initial schooling at
1-11     Dartmouth College, he earned a degree from the George Washington
1-12     University School of Medicine in 1957; and
1-13           WHEREAS, In fulfillment of his military duties, Dr. Duffy
1-14     served his residency at William Beaumont General Hospital in El
1-15     Paso; his ability and commitment as a surgeon specializing in
1-16     reconstructive practices were widely known, and in 1965 he was
1-17     awarded the Raymond Franklin Metcalfe Award for Surgical Research;
1-18     and
1-19           WHEREAS, Later army postings would take him far from the Lone
1-20     Star State, but  he returned to Texas  as chief of plastic surgery
1-21     service at Brooke Army Medical Center in 1973;  he was promoted to
1-22     chief of the Department of Surgery at the Brooke facility in 1976,
1-23     and his retirement from the army in 1978 as a colonel brought a
1-24     respected 20-year military career to a close; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Dr. Duffy's affinity for Texas encouraged him, after
 2-2     leaving the service, to remain in San Antonio, where he opened a
 2-3     private practice in plastic surgery and was a founding surgeon of
 2-4     Burn Care Associates, aiding severely burned patients and their
 2-5     families; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Throughout his long and impressive career, Dr. Duffy
 2-7     has also distinguished himself as a doting father of four children,
 2-8     Sean, Erin, Patrick, and the late Michael Duffy, and since his
 2-9     marriage to Joy Lawson on December 24, 1985, he has enjoyed the
2-10     affection and friendship of his two stepchildren, Karen and Tim;
2-11     and
2-12           WHEREAS, Dr. Duffy's family has grown through the years to
2-13     include his two daughters-in-law, Kelly Roe and Laura Risinger, and
2-14     his two sons-in-law, State Representative Miguel "Mike" D. Wise and
2-15     Brian Holiday, as well as five beloved  grandchildren, Chad, Miguel
2-16     III, Mark, Zachary, and Patrick;  and
2-17           WHEREAS, Dr. Duffy has proven himself an exemplary resident
2-18     whose admirable accomplishments  have made him truly worthy of the
2-19     title honorary Texan; now, therefore, be it
2-20           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-21     Legislature hereby declare Dr. Michael M. Duffy an honorary Texan
2-22     with all the privileges accorded those individuals native to the
2-23     Lone Star State and extend to him warmest best wishes for continued
2-24     good fortune and happiness; and, be it further
2-25           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-26     prepared for Dr. Duffy to serve as formal proof of his new status.
