                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The family and many friends of the Honorable Reese
 1-2     Turner were greatly saddened by his passing on February 21, 1998,
 1-3     at the age of 88, and we join them in mourning the loss of this
 1-4     notable Texan; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Turner was born in Cameron and
 1-6     attended Evansville College in Indiana, Rutgers University, and The
 1-7     University of Texas before being elected to the Texas House of
 1-8     Representatives, where he represented Milam County for two terms
 1-9     during the Great Depression; and
1-10           WHEREAS, This proud veteran served in the United States Army
1-11     during World War II; when he returned from his tour of duty,
1-12     then-U.S. Representative Lyndon Johnson gave him a job hosting "the
1-13     Old Storekeeper" radio program on KTBC; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Serving as a member of the Texas House of
1-15     Representatives and in the army proved to be just the beginning of
1-16     the government service career of Mr. Turner, who went on to work in
1-17     several capacities for the State of Texas, including assistant
1-18     commissioner for the Real Estate  Commission, from which he retired
1-19     in 1969; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Mr. Turner and his wife, Dora, moved to Cedar Park,
1-21     where Mr. Turner continued to be involved in civic affairs, serving
1-22     as a city councilman and mayor of the small town near Austin; and
1-23           WHEREAS, In addition to his professional achievements, this
1-24     remarkable man also served on the board that set up the Round Rock
 2-1     Hospital, now Columbia St.  David's Round Rock Hospital, and was a
 2-2     devoted member of the Methodist Church; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The life and career of the Honorable Reese Turner
 2-4     stand as an eloquent testimony to this remarkable man's drive,
 2-5     intelligence, and ability, and though he is deeply missed, his
 2-6     influence continues to be felt today by the many people whose lives
 2-7     he touched; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-9     Legislature pay tribute to the life of Reese Turner and extend
2-10     sincere sympathy to the members of his family and to his many
2-11     friends; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13     prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
2-14     Representatives adjourns this day it do so in memory of the
2-15     Honorable Reese Turner.
