No. 442 76R9197 BE-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, After four decades in education, including more than 1-2 30 years with Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Dr. Marvin Gordon 1-3 Kimbrough is retiring and her many years of able and inspirational 1-4 guidance are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Dr. Kimbrough was born in Austin and grew up near 1-6 the Tillotson College campus; her mother and sisters all attended 1-7 Tillotson and her father was a graduate of Samuel Huston College; 1-8 and 1-9 WHEREAS, Valedictorian of her Anderson High School class, Dr. 1-10 Kimbrough graduated summa cum laude and was the highest ranked 1-11 student of the last class at Tillotson before its merger with 1-12 Samuel Huston in 1952; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Dr. Kimbrough attended The University of Texas at 1-14 Austin at a time when few African American students were admitted, 1-15 she completed both a master's degree and a doctorate at UT, and 1-16 studied at the Sorbonne in Paris as well; she began her career in 1-17 education and her aptitude and diligence soon established her as a 1-18 respected instructor; and 1-19 WHEREAS, She returned to Austin to teach at Huston-Tillotson 1-20 under president Dr. J. J. Seabrook, and her tenure there has been 1-21 marked by many contributions and great success; and 1-22 WHEREAS, In addition to her teaching assignments, she has 1-23 served as a talented advisor to individuals and student groups; she 1-24 has been invaluable to a variety of campus councils and committees 2-1 and her articles and poetry have been widely published; and 2-2 WHEREAS, In tribute to the administrative ability of this 2-3 commendable educator and scholar, Huston-Tillotson College 2-4 appointed Dr. Kimbrough chairman of the humanities division; her 2-5 work over the years has earned her numerous honors and awards, 2-6 including a Fulbright Fellowship, the Black Arts Alliance Literary 2-7 Arts Award, and the Texas Education Agency's Heritage Award; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Though her presence in the classrooms of 2-9 Huston-Tillotson will be sorely missed, Dr. Kimbrough will no doubt 2-10 carry on as valued mentor and role model after retirement; as she 2-11 makes plans for yet another verse in her remarkable life, it is 2-12 justly appropriate to recognize her at this time; now, therefore, 2-13 be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-15 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Marvin Gordon Kimbrough for her 40 2-16 years of service to education in Texas and extend to her warm best 2-17 wishes for success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it 2-18 further 2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-20 prepared for Dr. Kimbrough as an expression of high regard by the 2-21 Texas House of Representatives.
