No. 443 76R8735 JBR-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Luke "Jack" Motley, Jr., on September 1-2 30, 1998, at the age of 88, brought a great loss to the family and 1-3 friends of this esteemed Center resident; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born July 4, 1910, this noteworthy man began a long 1-5 and productive banking career on January 2, 1930, as an employee of 1-6 First State Bank in Tenaha; he joined Farmers State Bank in 1937 1-7 and the following year became president, a post he held until 1977; 1-8 and 1-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Motley also served as chairman of the executive 1-10 committee and vice chairman of the board at Farmers State Bank; 1-11 during his lifetime he was a 21-year member and president of the 1-12 Center Independent School Board, president of the Shelby County 1-13 Chamber of Commerce, president of the Center Rotary Club, a founder 1-14 and president of the Center Industrial Foundation, and president of 1-15 the Shelby County Fair Association; and 1-16 WHEREAS, This community leader was a founding father of the 1-17 broiler industry in Shelby County and the Center Country Club, 1-18 which he also served as president; he gave generously of his time 1-19 as a member of the East Texas Area Council of the Boy Scouts of 1-20 America and the East Texas Baptist University Board of Trustees, 1-21 and he was an active member of First Baptist Church; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the friendship of 1-23 this remarkable man will long miss his presence, and he will surely 1-24 be remembered with great affection and admiration for many years to 2-1 come; now, therefore, be it 2-2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-3 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Luke "Jack" Motley, 2-4 Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to 2-5 his wife of 61 years, Martha Motley; to his son and 2-6 daughter-in-law, Luke Motley III and his wife, Silver; to his 2-7 daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Leland Howard; to his four 2-8 grandchildren and their spouses, Luke Motley IV and his wife, 2-9 Casey, Monica and Jon Van Slate, Meredith and Brian Morris, and 2-10 Debbie and Keith Armstrong; and to his five great-grandchildren; 2-11 and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-13 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-14 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-15 Luke "Jack" Motley, Jr.
