R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta 1-2 Sorority, Inc., is recognizing noted musician Jowanda Elaine 1-3 Jackson Jordan as part of its National Women's History Month 1-4 celebration; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A truly talented musician, Mrs. Jordan earned a 1-6 bachelor of science degree in music education at Bishop College and 1-7 a master of liberal arts degree at Southern Methodist University; 1-8 in addition, she has pursued post-graduate work at several notable 1-9 institutions; and 1-10 WHEREAS, She began her career as a music teacher in 1957 and 1-11 throughout the years choirs under her direction have been asked to 1-12 perform at numerous prestigious festivals across the land; her 1-13 South Oak Cliff High School Choir was honored with an invitation to 1-14 sing at the Youth World Music Festival in Vienna, Austria, in 1984; 1-15 and 1-16 WHEREAS, After her retirement from teaching in 1993, 1-17 Mrs. Jordan became director of the South Dallas Concert Choir, a 1-18 volunteer community choir that specializes in singing Negro 1-19 spirituals; she is currently active as coordinator of performing 1-20 arts and choir director at Paul Quinn College, and has applied her 1-21 considerable talents to the National Baptist Pre-Convention Choir, 1-22 the Black Academy of Arts and Letters Symphony in Black, and the 1-23 annual Music and the Civil Rights Movement for the Martin Luther 1-24 King, Jr., birthday celebration; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Mrs. Jordan serves with distinction on the board of 2-2 directors of the National Association of Negro Musicians and is an 2-3 officer and charter member of its Dallas Metroplex Branch founded 2-4 in 1983; she is also active on the board of directors of the local 2-5 chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc.; and 2-6 WHEREAS, A lifetime member of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of 2-7 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she has distinguished herself as 2-8 the group's choir director and was previously recognized by the 2-9 organization in 1982 for her 25 years of dedicated service to the 2-10 sorority; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Mrs. Jordan has drawn strength 2-12 and inspiration from her loving husband, Vernon T. Jordan, and 2-13 their enduring union has been blessed with two children, Russel and 2-14 Crystal; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Jowanda Elaine Jackson Jordan is a musician of 2-16 supreme ability and dedication, and it is indeed fitting that she 2-17 be honored at this time for her myriad accomplishments; now, 2-18 therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-20 Legislature hereby honor Jowanda Elaine Jackson Jordan for her 2-21 significant contributions to the African American community and the 2-22 State of Texas and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued 2-23 success and happiness; and, be it further 2-24 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-25 prepared for Mrs. Jordan as an expression of high regard by the 2-26 Texas House of Representatives.
