R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The members of the Old Timers Club of Houston have
1-2 established themselves and their organization as a worthy and
1-3 active force in the Lone Star State's largest city, and their years
1-4 of civic and charitable work are indeed worthy of special
1-5 legislative recognition; and
1-6 WHEREAS, This group of friends and neighbors first met on
1-7 October 21, 1989, to pay tribute to Lupe Zamarron, a respected
1-8 neighborhood coach and mentor; and
1-9 WHEREAS, For many years, Mr. Zamarron had organized softball
1-10 games that offered area youths a constructive outlet for their
1-11 energy and imagination; his guidance and example proved to be a
1-12 tremendously positive influence, not only on the neighborhood
1-13 youth, but also on the men who would become the Old Timers Club;
1-14 and
1-15 WHEREAS, Following Mr. Zamarron's example, the Old Timers
1-16 Club members have committed themselves to making a difference
1-17 within their neighborhood and their city; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Registered in 1992 and chartered by the State of
1-19 Texas in 1994, the Old Timers Club of Houston has become a
1-20 prominent and effective force for neighborhood change; through
1-21 barbecues, raffles, fund-raisers, and dances, the club raises money
1-22 for a number of worthwhile purposes, including scholarships for
1-23 local teens, children's toys for area hospitals, and the city's
1-24 Shoes for Kids campaign; and
2-1 WHEREAS, The founders of the club include Manuel Rodriguez,
2-2 Johnny Gonzales, George Cordova, Joe Cardenas, Gilbert Sandoval,
2-3 Tony Luna, Joe Fraga, Lawrence Villasenor, Edward Luna, Lupe
2-4 Rodriguez, Tom Farris, and Pete Farris; today the group has grown
2-5 to almost 60 members, all of whom work together to improve their
2-6 community and the lives of their neighbors and friends; and
2-7 WHEREAS, These men and the organization to which they so
2-8 proudly belong have accomplished a great deal, and it is indeed
2-9 appropriate to recognize them and their efforts at this time; now,
2-10 therefore, be it
2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-12 Legislature hereby honor the members of the Old Timers Club of
2-13 Houston and extend to them warm best wishes for even greater
2-14 success and happiness; and, be it further
2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16 prepared for the members of the Old Timers Club as an expression of
2-17 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
