R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Sports Hall of Fame honors the Lone Star 1-2 State's most outstanding athletes, and on March 20, 1999, high 1-3 school football legend Hollis Hobson Gainey, Jr., of Lubbock will 1-4 be inducted into this prestigious organization; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A longtime public school coach, educator, and 1-6 administrator, this noteworthy gentleman currently serves as 1-7 assistant athletic director of the Lubbock Independent School 1-8 District, a post he has held since 1977; and 1-9 WHEREAS, During his career as a student-athlete in Colorado 1-10 City in the early 1950s, Mr. Gainey excelled as a member of his 1-11 high school football team, leading his teammates to the 1954 Class 1-12 2A District Championship; and 1-13 WHEREAS, He rushed for 1,700 yards and scored 21 touchdowns 1-14 on his way to earning all-district and all-state honors that season 1-15 and was named to the 1954 All-Class Super All-State Team; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Mr. Gainey's collegiate athletic career at The 1-17 University of Texas at Austin was equally impressive, highlighted 1-18 by his role on the world-record-setting 440-yard and 880-yard relay 1-19 teams; he also established an NCAA record as a member of the 1-20 university's mile relay team and was the high point man at the 1959 1-21 Southwest Conference Track Meet; and 1-22 WHEREAS, After completing a bachelor's degree in physical 1-23 education in 1960, this patriotic gentleman served his country as a 1-24 member of the United States Army from 1960 to 1962; he later earned 2-1 a master's degree in education from Sam Houston State University 2-2 and continued his dedicated service to the young people of Texas in 2-3 his chosen field; and 2-4 WHEREAS, For the past 38 years, Mr. Gainey has been supported 2-5 in all his endeavors by his devoted wife, Nell Ruth Johnson Gainey; 2-6 at this time, it is indeed appropriate to recognize Mr. Gainey for 2-7 his singular achievement; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-9 Legislature hereby congratulate Hollis Hobson Gainey, Jr., on his 2-10 induction into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and commend him for 2-11 his many years of service as an exemplary educator of the young 2-12 people of Texas; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for Mr. Gainey as an expression of high regard by the 2-15 Texas House of Representatives.
