No. 487 76R9578 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Newton High School Eagles defeated the 1-2 Daingerfield High School Tigers 21-0 to claim the 1998 UIL Class 3A 1-3 Division II high school football state championship, and this 1-4 outstanding team achievement is truly deserving of special 1-5 recognition; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Head Coach Curtis Barbay and his coaching staff ably 1-7 prepared the Eagles for their battle against the Tigers; in this 1-8 thrilling contest, the Eagles carried a 7-0 lead into halftime and 1-9 in the fourth quarter tacked on two more touchdowns as the defense 1-10 held the Tigers scoreless en route to the shutout victory and the 1-11 state crown, finishing their season with an impressive 14-1 record; 1-12 and 1-13 WHEREAS, The vaunted Eagles defense held the Tigers to a mere 1-14 114 total yards of offense, while the offense racked up 353 total 1-15 yards fueled by the air attack of quarterback David Walker and 1-16 receivers Neil Williams and Myron Davis and a ground game led by 1-17 running backs LeGerald Jackson and Clifford Dean; on the defensive 1-18 side of the ball, Rod Gulley and Gerald Hartsfield snared key 1-19 interceptions, while Tim Kenebrew, Willie Farr, Clifford Dean, and 1-20 Derrick Jackson disrupted the Tigers' offensive continuity with 1-21 frequent sacks; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The other members of the Eagles squad are Terrance 1-23 Samuel, Ed Hartsfield, Kevin Wood, Randy Washington, Jermaine 1-24 Lewis, Malcolm Isom, Ty Gulley, Jermaine Hadnot, Jason Lewis, 2-1 Rodney Simpson, Jamal Hadnot, David Lafitte, Johnny Powell, Rod 2-2 Ervin, John Foster, Marcus Carver, Mathis Sells, Jesse Palomo, John 2-3 Bennett, Ryan Westbrook, Josh Harrell, Jason Davis, Wesley Forward, 2-4 Steve Jones, Charles Hadnot, Charles Hopsor, Rick Fomby, Bryan 2-5 Adams, Chad Burnett, Jeremy Lott, William Baldwin, Matthew 2-6 Washburn, John Ipes, Brian Martin, Andrew Rollins, John Meek, John 2-7 Perry, Jace Peveto, and Roy Finnel; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Achieving such a lofty goal required the team's 2-9 talented athletes to perform to the utmost of their abilities; this 2-10 triumph is an apt reflection of the team's dedication and 2-11 competitive spirit and is an appropriate culmination of many hours 2-12 of hard work and training; and 2-13 WHEREAS, The champions of the Newton High School Eagles 2-14 football team have distinguished themselves as formidable 2-15 competitors, and it is indeed fitting to pay tribute to them for 2-16 their impressive athletic accomplishments at this time; now, 2-17 therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-19 Legislature hereby honor the members of the Newton High School 2-20 Eagles on their 1998 UIL Class 3A Division II high school football 2-21 state championship and extend to them sincere best wishes for 2-22 continued success and happiness; and, be it further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for the Newton High School Eagles as an expression of high 2-25 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
