No. 488 76R9216 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On March 22, 1999, members of AARP will gather in 1-2 Austin to celebrate AARP Legislative Day at the State Capitol, and 1-3 this notable organization is truly worthy of special recognition; 1-4 and 1-5 WHEREAS, Founded in 1958 by retired educator Dr. Ethel Percy 1-6 Andrus, AARP is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization 1-7 dedicated to improving the quality of life of its members and their 1-8 families; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, AARP has focused its efforts 1-10 on providing information and education; community service; 1-11 legislative, judicial, and consumer advocacy; and member services; 1-12 and the organization has achieved outstanding success in these 1-13 areas; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In 1995, AARP opened a state office in Austin to 1-15 better serve its growing Texas membership, which now numbers more 1-16 than two million; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Approximately 1,000 concerned seniors will travel to 1-18 Austin for AARP Legislative Day, and these dedicated individuals 1-19 plan to share their ideas and concerns with elected officials on 1-20 such pressing issues as telemarketing fraud, assisted living, home 1-21 health, and nursing home resident protections; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Since the organization's founding, members of AARP 1-23 have sought to create a better life for older citizens across the 1-24 state and nation, and it is indeed appropriate that they be honored 2-1 for their accomplishments at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-3 Legislature hereby recognize March 22, 1999, as AARP Legislative 2-4 Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to AARP members 2-5 on the occasion of their visit to Austin; and, be it further 2-6 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-7 prepared for AARP as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-8 House of Representatives.
