No. 499 76R9723 BE-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Renowned journalist Cristina Saralegui is visiting 1-2 Texas, and as her respected and successful career has touched the 1-3 lives of countless Texans, her visit proves an appropriate occasion 1-4 to honor her and her work with special legislative recognition and 1-5 to welcome her to the Lone Star State; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Born in Havana, Cuba, Ms. Saralegui emigrated in 1-7 1960, beginning a new life with her family in Miami; her new home 1-8 provided great opportunity for this talented and ambitious young 1-9 woman, and she attended the University of Miami, majoring in mass 1-10 communications; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Her drive and talent led her to great success in 1-12 Spanish-language journalism, including an internship with Vanidades 1-13 and a 10-year role as editor-in-chief for Cosmopolitan en Espanol, 1-14 but it is her achievements as host and executive producer of the 1-15 Univision Network's "El Show de Cristina" that have brought 1-16 Ms. Saralegui the most acclaim; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The show premiered in 1989 and has become the 1-18 number-one rated talk show on Spanish-language television, with an 1-19 estimated audience of 100 million viewers in 18 countries; in 1-20 addition, this hardworking newswoman is host of a daily syndicated 1-21 radio program, "Cristina Opina," and publisher of the monthly 1-22 magazine Cristina La Revista; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The Council on Women's Issues recently voted to 1-24 recognize Ms. Saralegui as one of the premiere role models in 2-1 America, for she has been as successful in her private life as she 2-2 has been in her professional roles; and 2-3 WHEREAS, She and her husband, Marcos Avila, a musician and 2-4 founding member of the "Miami Sound Machine," are the parents of 2-5 three children, and the family resides in South Florida; and 2-6 WHEREAS, In television, print, and radio, Ms. Saralegui has 2-7 truly made her mark, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor her at 2-8 this time; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-10 Legislature hereby welcome Cristina Saralegui to Texas and extend 2-11 to her and her family warm best wishes for even greater happiness 2-12 and success in the future; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for Ms. Saralegui as a commemoration of this important 2-15 visit and as an expression of highest regard by the Texas House of 2-16 Representatives.
