By Dutton H.R. No. 504 76R10153 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Charles H. Johnson of Houston recently received an 1-2 Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, 1-3 and he is indeed worthy of special recognition; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson graduated from Houston's Jack Yates High 1-5 School and earned a bachelor of science degree in business from 1-6 Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, and a master of business 1-7 administration degree from Texas Southern University; he later 1-8 attained his funeral director and mortician licenses from 1-9 Commonwealth Mortuary School; and 1-10 WHEREAS, In addition to proudly serving his country in the 1-11 United States Army Air Force, Mr. Johnson has worked for the 1-12 Veteran's Administration Business Department in Tuskegee, Alabama, 1-13 as an economics instructor for the Black Studies Program at the 1-14 University of Houston, and as CEO and board president of the 1-15 C. Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., in Houston; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A true civic leader, Mr. Johnson is currently active 1-17 with the Harris County Medical Examiners Community Board and YMCA 1-18 South Central Board of Directors, and he is a respected member of 1-19 the local, state, and national funeral directors and morticians 1-20 associations, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, and Kappa Alpha Psi 1-21 Fraternity; and 1-22 WHEREAS, He has also served on the NAACP Board of Directors 1-23 and has donated his time and expertise to the benefit of the Boy 1-24 Scouts of America, the Clean Houston/Houston Proud Committee, the 2-1 Florence Crittendon Home for Unwed Mothers, the Harris County 2-2 Hospital District Board of Managers, and the Committee for 2-3 Protection of Human Subjects; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Some of the myriad awards Mr. Johnson has received 2-5 in recognition of his accomplishments include the Southwest 2-6 Regional Hampton Alfred T. Kynard Memorial Award, the National 2-7 Hampton Alumni Association's Merit Award, the 1998 Honored Black 2-8 Family Award from the National Black Family Conference, a United 2-9 States Presidential Certificate of Appreciation, the Texas 2-10 Governor's Certificate of Appreciation, and Business Man of the 2-11 Year from the National Association of Market Developers; he was 2-12 also recognized by the Houston Funeral Directors and Morticians 2-13 Association and the Texas Funeral Directors Association for his 50 2-14 years as a licensed funeral professional; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Throughout the years he has drawn strength and 2-16 inspiration from his wife, Betty Hicks Johnson, and his beloved 2-17 children and grandchildren; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Charles H. Johnson has long distinguished himself 2-19 through his many good works, and it is most fitting that we honor 2-20 him for his significant accomplishments at this time; now, 2-21 therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-23 Legislature hereby congratulate Charles H. Johnson on his receipt 2-24 of an Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black 2-25 Caucus and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success 2-26 and happiness; and, be it further 2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-1 prepared for Mr. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the 3-2 Texas House of Representatives.
