R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
 1-2     congratulate Gloria J. Gorham of Houston for being named an
 1-3     Outstanding Texan by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School in
 1-5     Austin, Mrs. Gorham attended The University of Texas at Austin,
 1-6     where she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a
 1-7     master's degree in education; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Mrs. Gorham fulfilled her lifelong desire to become
 1-9     an educator when she became a valued employee of the Austin
1-10     Independent School District; this esteemed woman later moved to
1-11     Houston and  served as district principal for one year before
1-12     becoming principal at Crawford Elementary School; and
1-13           WHEREAS, For the past two decades, Mrs. Gorham has been
1-14     instrumental in fostering strong bonds between Crawford Elementary
1-15     School and the Fifth Ward community, resulting in numerous
1-16     collaborations that have dramatically improved the quality of
1-17     education for area students; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Enrichment activities that are provided in
1-19     conjunction with community groups and individuals include
1-20     mentoring, counseling, pen pal, and storytelling programs, as well
1-21     as opportunities to experience "fearless math"; in addition,
1-22     students may participate in after-school tutorials, adventure play,
1-23     and arts and crafts, and an initiative targeting the needs of
1-24     at-risk young males; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Mrs. Gorham's vision and leadership have further
 2-2     enabled students to benefit from the Depelchin Head Start program
 2-3     and the Youth Opportunities program, the latter of which provides
 2-4     job-training experience at local work sites; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, This remarkable educator is also a devoted mother
 2-6     and a member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and Delta Sigma Theta
 2-7     Sorority; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Gloria J. Gorham has set high
 2-9     standards to which all teachers and administrators may aspire, and
2-10     she is indeed worthy of special recognition at this time; now,
2-11     therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-13     Legislature hereby congratulate Gloria J. Gorham for her
2-14     recognition by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus as an Outstanding
2-15     Texan and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success
2-16     and happiness; and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-18     prepared for Mrs. Gorham as an expression of high regard by the
2-19     Texas House of Representatives.
