R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, California State Assembly Speaker Antonio R.
 1-2     Villaraigosa is visiting the Lone Star State, and it is truly a
 1-3     privilege to welcome this esteemed legislator to the State Capitol;
 1-4     and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The 63rd speaker of the California State Assembly,
 1-6     Speaker Villaraigosa is a graduate of UCLA and is a lifelong
 1-7     resident of the Los Angeles area; before his election to the
 1-8     assembly, he demonstrated his outstanding leadership qualities as
 1-9     president of the American Federation of Government Employees, Local
1-10     3230, a post that earned him great respect and admiration; and
1-11           WHEREAS, In his inaugural term as a member of the assembly,
1-12     he was named Democratic whip and was assigned to the powerful
1-13     appropriations and budget committees; in 1997, he was selected to
1-14     serve as majority leader; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Speaker Villaraigosa has long championed the causes
1-16     of crime prevention, more-accessible public transportation, and
1-17     improved health care for families and children; he is also one of
1-18     the Golden State's most vocal supporters of education, as
1-19     demonstrated by his role as the principal architect of a record
1-20     $9.2 billion proposal to build and modernize California's public
1-21     schools; and
1-22           WHEREAS, This exemplary gentleman is a source of great pride
1-23     to his wife, Corina, and his children, Marisela, Prisila, Antonio,
1-24     Jr., and Natilia Fe, and though his duties as speaker require a
 2-1     great deal of time and energy, he is still able to lend his support
 2-2     to a number of community organizations, including the Big Brothers
 2-3     of Los Angeles, the Boyle Heights College Institute, the Salesian
 2-4     Boys and Girls Club, and the American Civil Liberties Union; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Antonio R. Villaraigosa is a credit to the
 2-6     California State Assembly and to his state and nation, and it is
 2-7     indeed fitting that we recognize him at this time; now, therefore,
 2-8     be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-10     Legislature hereby welcome Speaker Antonio R. Villaraigosa to the
2-11     State Capitol and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
2-12     success and happiness; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for Speaker Villaraigosa to commemorate his visit to Texas
2-15     and as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
2-16     Representatives.
