No. 544 76R681 JHS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Dorothy Cotten Daugherty on May 25, 1-2 1998, at the age of 71, brought a great loss to the family and many 1-3 friends of this esteemed woman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Yoakum County, Mrs. Daugherty was born 1-5 on October 12, 1926, on the family-owned Cotten Ranch; she attended 1-6 public schools in Andrews and graduated as valedictorian of her 1-7 class in 1944; and 1-8 WHEREAS, While attending Sul Ross College on a scholarship, 1-9 the former Dorothy Cotten met her future husband, Franklin W. 1-10 Daugherty, and in 1945, after his return from active duty in the 1-11 military, they were married; and 1-12 WHEREAS, In 1948, Mrs. Daugherty earned a bachelor's of 1-13 business administration degree, and following a period of study at 1-14 The University of Texas at Austin, she returned to her alma mater, 1-15 where she received her master's of business administration degree; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, Relocating to Canyon in 1963, Mrs. Daugherty served 1-18 as an assistant professor in the school of business at the former 1-19 West Texas State University; an outstanding educator, her 1-20 dedication to her role as a teacher was matched only by her 1-21 devotion to her husband and children; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Dorothy Cotten Daugherty was a woman of strength and 1-23 determination, whose kindness and generosity will not soon be 1-24 forgotten, and although she has been missed by all who knew her, 2-1 her spirit surely lives on in the hearts and minds of the many 2-2 individuals whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-4 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dorothy Cotten 2-5 Daugherty and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: 2-6 to her husband, Franklin W. Daugherty; to her son, Stephen F. 2-7 Daugherty; to her daughters, Sheila Blanche Abbott and Claire 2-8 Newman; to her mother, Blanche Cotten; to her grandchildren, Scott 2-9 Abbott, Lauren, Travis, and Greyson Daugherty, and Katheryn Newman; 2-10 to her sisters, Helen Morris, Mildred Farris, and Barbara Finney; 2-11 to her brothers, Melvin and Gayle Cotten; and to the many other 2-12 relatives and friends of this beloved woman; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas 2-15 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-16 Dorothy Cotten Daugherty.
