                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The recent passing of the Honorable Edgar Lee Berlin
 1-2     on February 12, 1999, at the age of 75, has brought a great loss to
 1-3     the family and many friends of this esteemed individual; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born in Port Arthur, Mr. Berlin honorably served his
 1-5     country as a member of the U.S. Air Force during World War II; he
 1-6     graduated from Lamar University and furthered his education at The
 1-7     University of Texas School of Law, working as a pipefitter to fund
 1-8     his schooling; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, While still a law student, Mr. Berlin was elected to
1-10     the house of representatives and served the citizens of Jefferson
1-11     County during the 52nd, 53rd, and 54th legislative sessions; during
1-12     his tenure in office he authored bills pertaining to workers'
1-13     compensation and unemployment compensation and proposed a state
1-14     minimum wage law; and
1-15           WHEREAS, After leaving the legislature he practiced law in
1-16     Beaumont until 1967; he later worked for the Office of Economic
1-17     Opportunity in Dallas, on the staff of Texas Attorney General Mark
1-18     White, and for the Texas Workforce Commission, where he was
1-19     employed until his retirement in December; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Though Mr. Berlin's counsel and warmth will be
1-21     deeply missed, his spirit will surely remain in the hearts and
1-22     minds of the many people whose lives he touched for many years to
1-23     come; now, therefore, be it
1-24           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-1     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Edgar
 2-2     Lee Berlin and extend sincere sympathy to his daughters, Janice
 2-3     Graham and Nora Copley, and to the many other relatives and friends
 2-4     of this fine man; and, be it further
 2-5           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-6     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
 2-7     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 2-8     Edgar Lee Berlin.
