R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The New Caney High School Academic Decathlon team 1-2 earned second place at the Texas Academic Decathlon competition, 1-3 and this outstanding accomplishment is indeed worthy of special 1-4 recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The Academic Decathlon was created in 1968 to 1-6 recognize excellence in academic achievement, challenging students 1-7 in a variety of subjects, including mathematics, science, social 1-8 studies, economics, fine arts, language, speech, and grammar; each 1-9 nine-member team is equally divided into honors, scholastic, and 1-10 varsity divisions, providing for a broad range of academic 1-11 backgrounds; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The New Caney team finished second overall in their 1-13 division, amassing a total of 42,744 points and placing highest 1-14 among all teams from Region 7, a stellar performance that earned 1-15 its members numerous scholarships; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Head coach Jim Moore and coaches Brice Mertz and 1-17 Phyllis Kerr ably prepared the New Caney team for this mentally 1-18 demanding event; its talented competitors include Phillip Pena, 1-19 Phillip McClellan, and Chris Omura in the varsity division, Austin 1-20 Scheible, Mariel Molina, and Jennifer Brumley in the scholastic 1-21 division, and Gwen LaBove, Christie Parker, and Cari Sue Wilmot in 1-22 the honors division; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The determination and academic excellence 1-24 demonstrated by all the members of the New Caney team are truly 2-1 commendable, and it is most fitting that we pay tribute to them at 2-2 this time; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-4 Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the New Caney High 2-5 School Academic Decathlon team for finishing second in the state 2-6 competition and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued 2-7 success and happiness; and, be it further 2-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-9 prepared for the New Caney High School Academic Decathlon team as 2-10 an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
