R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The 90th birthday of a notable Texan is indeed an
 1-2     occasion worthy of special recognition, and on April 25, 1999, John
 1-3     Scott Gray, Sr., of Houston will celebrate this memorable
 1-4     milestone; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born in Wharton County on April 25, 1909, Mr. Gray
 1-6     is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Houston and
 1-7     attended Sam Houston College before embarking on a career with
 1-8     Hughes Tool Company that would span more than 30 years; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Baptized in infancy at St. James A.M.E. Church in
1-10     Wharton, Mr. Gray joined Houston's Green Chapel A.M.E. Church in
1-11     1937 and has since served that venerable institution in a variety
1-12     of roles, such as steward, trustee, custodian, yard man, Sunday
1-13     School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, district
1-14     superintendent, and in any other capacity in which he was needed;
1-15     and
1-16           WHEREAS, Active in politics as well, this admirable gentleman
1-17     participated in the first election in which African Americans were
1-18     allowed to vote in the Democratic primary, and he has voted in
1-19     every succeeding election; named precinct chairman some 50 years
1-20     ago, Mr. Gray is considered the oldest precinct judge in Harris
1-21     County and possibly in the Lone Star State; this remarkable man was
1-22     elected to serve as a delegate to the Democratic National
1-23     Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1988, and he has attended most
1-24     of the county and state conventions; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Mr. Gray is the proud father of three children, John
 2-2     Scott, Jr., Billie Rose, and Wyona Mae; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has long been an inspiration to
 2-4     his many friends and family members, and it is truly a pleasure to
 2-5     join them in honoring him at this time; now, therefore, be it
 2-6           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-7     Legislature hereby congratulate John Scott Gray, Sr., on the
 2-8     occasion of his 90th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes
 2-9     for continued happiness; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-11     prepared for Mr. Gray as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-12     House of Representatives.
